Product Description

This book introduces students to the literature of Anglo-Saxon England, the period from 600–1066, in a collection of fifteen specially commissioned essays. The Companion is aimed at students encountering Old English literature for the first time, who require clear guidance and orientation in an unfamiliar field. The first chapters describe briefly the political, social and ecclesiastical history of the period and how poetry and prose developed and flourished. A succinct account of Old English language provides beginners with a guide to grammar, syntax and vocabulary. Subsequent chapters explore such topics as Germanic legend and heroic ideals, paganism and fatalism, the cult of saints and responses to the Bible. Important prose texts, such as those by Bede, Alfred, Aelfric and Wulfstan, are covered under these thematic headings. Poems such as The Battle of Maldon, The Wanderer, The Seafarer and The Dream of the Rood, are discussed in detail, but in association with related texts, in prose as well as poetry. A separate chapter is devoted to Beowulf, but aspects of the poem are also discussed in other chapters. Finally a bibliography lists essential editions, reference works and critical studies.

An excellent guide for anyone interested in Old English 27 April 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Like the vast majority of people nowadays I discovered Old English as an undergraduate, rather than as a casual reader in my spare time. Initially I was bored and sceptical. "Oh my God this is like German, why do I have to study it?" I thought. However, the Anglo-Saxons began to grow on me after a while and one gains a valuable insight into their culture using this book. As well as treating of heroic themes in poems like Beowulf and the Christian ethos which inspired such poems as The Dream of the Rood, it also offers general overviews such as "Fatalism and the Millennium" (something very relevant!) and the role of saints in Anglo-Saxon England. This makes the poetry and prose of this alien society more accessible.

Nor is this book overly technical, so it is not daunting to approach. Although I read it in the context of a textbook, it could equally be appreciated by those merely reading Old English as a hobbie.

Strongly recommended.

Knowledgeable essays for both Student and Scholar 16 Nov 2011
By Thorrin Jonsson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I just recently purchased this book, after already having a year of Anglo-Saxon (Old English) study under my belt; yet I personally hade only indulged in the Poetry(The Seafarer, Beowulf, The Wife's Lament, The Battle of Brunanburh, The Battle of Maldon, etc...) and little besides studying the verse and that of the language itself -- now what drove me to purchase this book is that I could gain a more behind the scenes look in Anglo-Saxon studies and become more informed in current scholarship, and this book proved well!
Albeit this book is aimed more strongly towards people with little knowledge of the Life of Anglo-Saxon Studies and those newer to it, it is a good collection of essays any scholar could do well with having close at hand... This book is highly recommended by me to anyone with an interest in Old English or Anglo-Saxon
