Excellent selection of high-quality choral singing,
By
This review is from: Cambridge Clare College Choir: Illumina (Audio CD)
This is unaccompanied choral singing of the highest quality, produced by John Rutter and recorded in the lofty and acoustically superb Lady Chapel at Ely Cathedral. Using the theme of light, and with material spanning nine centuries, the choir paint a timeless spiritual tapestry. Most of the words are sung in Latin (12 tracks) with the rest in English (3 tracks), Russian (3 tracks) and Finnish (1 track). The accompanying booklet is informative and contains all the words, including translations where relevant. The standard of performance is excellent and the choice of material works well, with the acoustics giving a sense of space that is appropriate for Ligeti's amazing 'Lux Aeterna'. Favoured tracks will doubtless vary with mood and circumstances of the listener, but for me the Wood and Ligeti just come out ahead of the Holst and Desprez.

Wonderful sound,

I found this a first class recording. The selection of works for this CD is coherent, linked by the theme of light, and from the earliest to the C20th century all are beautifully performed. The choir's sound is light but with a compelling bloom and warmth. They are accurate and convey the spiritual content of these works with conviction. Highly recommended.

Hail, gladdening Light!,

If you are a member of a choir you will most likely know a few of the works on this recording. But probably the majority you will be unfamiliar with. Clare College Choir give superb performances of a wide range of material, including Gregorian chant, works by Palestrina, Byrd, Tallis and more modern compositions by Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky, Grechaninov, Holst, Charles Wood, William Harris and John Rutter. The choir sound at ease with all the different styles, directed ably by Timothy Brown. "Hail gladdening Light" is the title of three tracks on the CD (by Wood, Grechaninov and Tchaikovsky), my own favourite being the Wood. If you like unaccompanied choral singing this CD should introduce you to some fine music to enjoy time after time. The accompanying booklet gives texts, translations and background notes to complete a well-produced CD from Collegium. Snap it up!
