Book Description

19 Jan 2012
'At school, we believe education should touch the whole child. This includes the physical, emotional, spiritual, social and cognitive aspects of the child's life. We teach children quietness as a skill to reflect and recharge their inner lives. Lorraine Murray helped us on this journey.' -- Sheila Laing, Head Teacher Stress and behavioural disorders are common in children, who are increasingly bombarded by marketing campaigns, faced with school and peer pressure, and able to sense the stress of adults around them. Mindfulness and meditation can help children recognise and cope with these pressures, releasing bad feelings gently and giving them simple tools to deal with tension and stress throughout their lives. In this practical and inspiring book, Lorraine Murray shows parents, teachers and youth workers how to lead fun and peaceful meditation sessions with children. Lorraine explains a variety of different approaches, from meditations around daily activities for busy families, to ideas for group 'quietness' sessions in schools. She provides fun, tactile rhymes for toddlers to help them calm down before bedtime, and suggests ways to help teenagers reduce anxiety. She goes on to explain how these methods can help children with ADHD and those on the autistic spectrum, giving a range of case studies. This book is suitable for complete beginners, or those with some experience of relaxation and meditation techniques. It offers all the advice needed to lead sessions with children, whilst encouraging the reader to adapt and develop their own ways of helping children to feel calmer, happier and more peaceful.

More About the Author

Welcome and thanks for joining me! :)

I'm Lorraine Murray - author of the Calm Kids book.

I started up my own company Feel Good Therapies ltd as a professional aromatherapist and Reiki Teacher. I've practised meditation personally since I was 28 (a long time ago!) and have always felt this would be a great skill to teach our children.

I spent a few years working in schools teaching children from a wide range of backgrounds and ages - from age 7 right up to teenagers. I have learned how children can easily practise meditation and the amazing benefits it brings them.

I am personally interested in ADHD and Autism and worked with a few families in this situation (which you read about in the book). I'm currently working on my 2nd book which will be based on over 30 case studies - working with children with special needs, autism and adhd - going into much more depth about methods we can use to help them relax and feel more peaceful.

I love yoga, spending time with my dog, hubbie and our 2 pussycats.

I run courses based on the calm kids book (online and face to face) in addition to a wide range of complementary therapies and meditation for adults.

I love teaching because every time I teach, I learn something new. My students are wonderful and I feel truly grateful to them and all who have bought this book.

Namaste

Lorraine

Review

'Her meditation techniques are simple, sound, and cleverly age appropriate; whether you try them on your Y10 tutor group, or yourself, you could see some rather astonishing results.' -- Teach Secondary 'In an age when children are constantly stimulated and have very little opportunity to practice silence, this book is a welcome contribution.' -- David Lorimer, Scientific and Medical Network Review 'In this practical and inspiring book, Lorraine Murray shows how to lead fun and peaceful meditation sessions with children. She provides fun, tactile rhymes for toddlers to help them calm down before bedtime, and suggests ways to help teenagers reduce anciety ... This book is suitable for complete beginners, or those with some experience of relaxation and meditation techniques.' -- Green Parent 'This book is well balanced, and it gives a clear background rationale for the use of meditation with children ... The book facilitates the reader's understanding of the topic area in an easily accessible way, as well as giving them the skills to be able to use meditation and develop meditations for their children ... It would be good for parents to read, as well as benefiting people working with children. The book is easy to read and mostly jargon-free, making it readily accessible.' -- www.youthinmind.info

5.0 out of 5 stars What a powerful book! 26 Jan 2012
Format:Paperback
I know I am prejudiced because I am the headteacher Lorraine worked with but Lorraine's book is outstanding from the perfect cover of the child who looks positively grounded and calm, to the ideas right through the book, it's a gem. I read one of the meditation scripts to my daughter, stopped after 5 lines and said, "What do you think?" 'DON'T STOP',she exclaimed. It was that easy.. pick up the book and read and you are transported to calm and lovely places and images. Well done Lorraine. I've recommended it to many headteachers and therapists and they are all off buying it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful! 9 Feb 2012
Format:Paperback
I'm so delighted with my purchase of this book - it's worth its weight in gold! The book is so well-written, easy to read and easy to follow. I tried a meditation with my 9 year old son this evening and he was so receptive to just the simple relaxation exercise that we tried. It's given me the confidence to try a lot more of the techniques and I just know all of my children are going to love them.

I think what I love the most about the book is Lorraine's complete unconditional love and acceptance of children, just as they are. I think her reminder that we often expect too much from our children, and indeed ourselves, and that we are ALL still learning, is something that we must all try to remember whenever we judge ourselves and our children. So the next time that pesky thought pops into my head along the lines of 'Oh will you just stop fidgeting' when one of my children has been waiting ages for me to finish that phonecall (or something similar) I shall remind myself that it's not fair of me to set expectations for my kids. They cannot disappoint me and I shall treasure each moment with them that teaches me more about their nature and the wonderful human beings that they are :-).
