Book Description

1 July 2007
Juliet is already wondering whether her live-in boyfriend Will has lost his lust for life -- and for her -- when tragedy strikes: He stands her up. On Valentine's Day. Then some jerk in a fancy car splashes her with icky London rain water, takes a good, hard look at her, and drives away. What's worse he was gorgeous, the kind of guy you dream would sweep you off your feet...or at least remember you on Valentine's Day. On top of having to win a big advertising account at work it's a wonder Juliet doesn't collapse into a puddle herself. The course of true love never did run smooth To Juliet's surprise, the mystery driver turns out to be an adman named Sykes -- her competition for the hot account -- and he's awfully sorry about the splashing. So sorry that he whisks Juliet away for a romantic weekend in Verona, the storied home of her Shakespearean namesake. A funny thing happens, though. When Juliet gets back, Will's all sweet again and Sykes pitches an ad campaign suspiciously similar to Juliet's. Suddenly it's time for fair Juliet to decide whether she and Sykes are meant-to-be star-crossed lovers -- or whether Romeo has been right by her side all along.

From the Back Cover

Juliet can't help wishing she had more romance in her life. She loves her boyfriend Will, but after living together for two and a half years, she's come to realise that thirtysomething monogamy isn't all it's cracked up to be. Will used to whisk her off to candlelit restaurants. Now his idea of a perfect evening is a video and vindaloo. He used to leave post-it notes saying 'I love you' on the bathroom mirror. Now the only things she finds are his dirty socks on the bathroom floor. So, when Juliet meets a sexy, dark-eyed Adonis from a rival London advertising agency she is sorely tempted. And when he invites her away for an illicit, no-expense-spared weekend in Verona it's almost impossible to resist. Her very own Romeo.

But does she want to risk losing Will and all they have shared together? Juliet must work out what's really important in life and whether romance really is all about sexy lingerie and red roses. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars True Romance! 29 Jun 2003
Format:Paperback
'Calling Romeo' is a compelling, feel good romance. I bought it on a whim, not expecting a lot, read it in Greece and have been recommending it continuously since.
The lovable characters and realistic scenario mixed with a touch of fairy tale, result in a novel full of emotion and laughs. Alexandra Potter is a wonderful writer with the ability to capture her reader into the whirl-wind of Will and Jules.
I loved this book, and was disappointed to reach the end, although the story does conclude how it should and as a reader you are left feeling content. A must read for all romantics.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun read 17 Oct 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This book is another 'take' on Romeo and Juliet, perhaps because the main character's name is Juliet! It's a sad, ultimately feel-good book about one woman finding out whether looks are everything, and what love is really about. It's a good read, if you like the feel-good 'chick-flick' of the literary world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Addictive, page - turner. 19 Oct 2009
Format:Paperback
Being the fact that I'm a 22yr old straight male, I didn't at first thought, imagine I'd be as interested in this sort of book when I first came across it in a villa in Majorca this summer. I gave it a shot however, and after barely having put it down for more than an hour in 2 days, I was finished.

This is a fun, interesting, compelling book that will always provide the reader with some aspect to which they can empathize. The two characters, Will and Juliette, really draw you in and make you desperate to continue reading to find out how their situation changes throughout the book.

Another great bit of writing by Alexandra Potter, definitely worth reading.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings about this - 25 Mar 2011
Format:Paperback
I'm not certain why I somehow still read books about someone infidelity when I know that all it ends up doing is making me feel terribly agonised. It irks me to no end, but perhaps I keep looking for a book that gives an insight to both sides of the party. Well, Calling Romeo fits well, but it isn't the best read, I don't think.

I'm very torn about my response to this book. On the one hand, the trickling pace of the plot bored me. Too much narrative! I was tempted to skip through and just get to the ending. I disliked the ending; hated the message it could have easily given to the reader. On the other hand, I appreciated Juliet's hesitations because that is how it is. Unless one is unfeeling or morally apathetic, you would hesitate and reconsider to the nth degree your decision to begin an affair. I thought Juliet's thoughts and indecision - her consultations to friends even - were an accurate portrayal of that dilemma. But I'm not saying she justifies it - adultery for me is never justified, whatever the circumstance. Juliet does however, show that she isn't indifferent and has genuine reasons for her affair with Sykes. Admittedly, I believe part - a very small part - of the blame lies on Will, but as Juliet realises love is not always the happy side of the coin.

Calling Romeo is underscored by many subplots, and one can view the events from different points of view. And so when everything unravels, there is much, too much pain swivelling around the characters. I'm not exactly happy how Will handled Juliet's unfaithfulness, and how towards the end Juliet for me didn't feel as apologetic as she should be.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW! 20 Feb 2011
Format:Paperback
I bought Calling Romeo on the off chance when it was on offer, after reading quite a few books by Alexandra Potter, I knew it was going to be a good read. But Calling Romeo is better than good its absolutely outstanding! I was gripped for 48 hours turning page after page. Its compelling, funny, and anything but predictable. A must read for anybody who appreciates good writing and a brilliant storyline. Chick-lit at its absolute best!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Great 3 Jun 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I am usually a fan of ALs work and engaging characters. However in this one I found it difficult to feel any sympathy for our heroine as she falls for the flashy. What person doesnt like all of that. But in giving something different to the reader it took awayfrom the usual likeability of the characters. I was disappointed.
