Product Description

Product Description

* The Outsiders were Wimbledon's official entry into the 1977 UK punk menagerie. The line-up of Adrian Borland (vocals, guitar), Bob Lawrence (bass), and Adrian Janes (aka Jan - drums) had in fact been playing together for a few years before punk took off. Citing the Velvet Underground as their main influence, The Outsiders (name suggested by Janes) was a classic example of an existing band that, through the explosion of punk, managed to elevate themselves to a higher level, thereby securing more gigs and even getting records released.

* The band's music is rooted in classic rock and roll, but served with adequate amounts of speed and attitude to fully warrant the use of the punk rock tag. At the time, however, The Outsiders proved to be a fitting name for a band of literate longhairs that in large saw themselves exiled by the punk elite. Quite uncommonly for the times, The Outsiders' first release was not a 7", but an album. Financed in large by Adrian Borland's parents, the LP "Calling On Youth" was released in 1,000 copies on The Outsiders' own Raw Edge label in May of 1977 (some of the album's recordings date back to 1976). The music is produced as well as mixed by the band themselves. And the cover is designed by Adrian Borland himself.

* The LP has the honour of being the very first DIY-released punk album by a UK group. Musically, it is a sprawling affair with everything from acoustic takes to harder edged punk rock.

* This is the first time this record has been released on CD and comes with full endorsement from the Borland estate and new notes by Brittle Heavens Rients Bootsma

This was the debut album by The Outsiders featuring the one & only Adrian Borland, later of 'The Sound', 'Second Layer', various other projects and an artist in his own right.
This album is a real worthwhile addition to any collection, it's raw, a bit punky, but you can hear glimpses of what was to follow here. You can see already where Adrian was heading, because there are songs here, rather than just riffs, and even though it has the feel of a well recorded demo at times, that just adds to the whole excitement of these recordings. A great job by Cherry Red, and a great price...well worth the money, and for any fan of The Sound, an essential purchase.

I first bought this album (vinyl days!) back in 1977, just when punk was becoming an explosion. I loved this album then and even more so now, thank you for releasing it on CD, well worthwhile. The track 'Break Free' still remains very special.

5.0 out of 5 stars what a blast from the past 31 Mar 2012

wow, when i heard cherry red was putting this album out on cd FINALLY a few months ago i was stocked!!!, god i dont think i have listened to the old viynl edition of this since 1985 or so and from time to time always wondered why this classic punk album from 1977 never had made it to cd, well after all these years its finally here with the ep as bonus tracks, this was a great british punk band ( pre the sound) and this classic came out in 1977, hard to belive that was 35 years ago already, cherry red did a great job remastering this and gives you a full in depth booklet with this release as well as close up but sadley im at an age where i need reading glasses now so i cant really read the small inlays to long like i used to, i dont know why when boland was alive this never came out and its to bad they waited until 13 years after his death to reissue this on cd but well its finally here, many dont remember the outsiders but i first got into them when i saw a flyer years ago from the roxy in london and they where listed as openers for the jam, it made me purchase the lp in the import section around 1983 and i really dug this record, kind of did not understand why the outsiders where overlooked unlike a lot of the other great punk bands of that era but if you liked sham 69, the rutz, the rezillos and the likes of those bands you will have no problem with this reissue, its really nice to have after all these years, great original punk no gimmicks here!!!!!
