Flourishes for everyone!, 7 Oct 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Calligraphic Flourishing: A New Approach to Ancient Art (Paperback)
This book looks at flourishing quite thoroughly and can be a bit daunting for beginners and even intermediate level calligraphers.
Flourishing is looked at from its inception as squiggles or doddles and progress throughout history.
Keen attention is paid to the way in which pen hold can influence not only flourishing but also calligraphy. A myriad of exercises help the reader to overcome problems of 'traditional hold' and loosen up the hand and prepare it for flourishing.
Both square tool and pointed tool flourishing is looked at, quite rare as both pointed and flat tools are hardly looked at in the same texts. This contrast and comparison is extremely useful for both beginners and professionals alike.
The section on cadels is beautifully put together. The layout, technique and formula of the cadel and cadel families are well thought out but are nonetheless, unfortunately scary. This should not dissuade one as all that is needed is perseverance and practise.
Touching on fraktur flourishing and other square pen embellishments adds perspective to the text. The section on Off Hand Flourishing could have been a little more extensive but care was given in telling the reader to look to other very well explained sources in this field of flourishing.
The essential thing about this book is to follow the exercises and practise.
A welcomed addition to the shelf of every calligrapher, and some graphic artists.

This book is beatifully done, and there are some fine examples. A bit complicated for the beginner but perfect for those enhancing to perfecticting tecnique and style. Heavy emphasis on the cadel families. A must for the library of any serious calligrapher.
