Product Description

Archibald "Arch" Stan was a local cop in Midian, Tennessee that was good at his job, good at being a husband, and exceptionally good at hiding his disappointment at not being able to figure out what was missing in his life that made it all seem so empty.

Lafayette Hendricks looked like a drifter, a broken-down hitchhiker blown through Midian on the prevailing winds. When Arch catches him in a fight on the town square, though, things start to get weird, fast, because the guy he's fighting doesn't die when he gets shot. And Hendricks is carrying a sword.

Pretty soon, Arch's whole life is turned upside down by Hendricks's revelation that there's a secret world operating under the one he's been living in his whole life - one filled with demons, chaos, and unspeakable evils, one of which is already in town, stirring trouble. And if the two men don't band together to keep watch on the darkness falling on Midian, then this small town might just get swallowed up by the forces of evil - with the rest of the world to follow shortly behind.

WARNING: Contains violence, coarse language and sexual situations.

4.0 out of 5 stars A diverting demonic romp 2 April 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A demon hunter rolls into Smalltown, Tennessee; his sword (blessed with holy water) hidden in the folds of his drover’s coat. A horde of lesser demons, disguised as low-life human trash, cause chaos killing civilians. An honourable local lawman, previously clueless about the existence of demons but an admirably fast learner, joins the fray. A greater demon, whose top-dollar suit is really rather too sharp for the rural setting, attempts to summon something grievously big and bad which might bring about the apocalypse. Something big and bad ends up… trapped inside a dairy cow called Creampuff.

I admit it. Author Robert J Crane got me in the early chapters with the cow called Creampuff and its unlikely possession by an unearthly inhabitant.
But even before that laugh-out-loud moment, I was enjoying this new additional to the urban fantasy genre. Not that the action takes place anywhere urban, so maybe this would be better described as ‘modern magical mythology.’ Consider it in the same category as Harry Dresden or the Iron Druid and you’ll know what to expect. And there’s more than a passing resemblance to the early Dresden files – in an entirely good way.
‘Called’ is action-packed, witty and quick-paced. The writing is clean and crisp. Wry observations about the ridiculous nature of human (and demon) behaviour abound, so look out for the PC-demon who doesn’t want anyone to think his murderous rampage is in any way stimulated by racial bigotry (he’s killing people cos they’s good, not cos they’s black…). The key characters are easily identifiable and the kind of guys you want to spend some time with.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read 27 Aug 2014

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I stumbled upon this author while looking for free Kindle downloads and, after reading the ones he was giving away, was hooked.
I had bought this book before actually reading what it was about. I had read Crane's 'Girl in a Box' series and was just looking for something else he had written. Starting to read, I thought this was a decision I might regret. The character being described was definitely a cowboy and if there is one genre I don't read it is Westerns.
I am so happy that I stuck with reading past the first page! This was a brilliant book and I immediately bought the second.
'Called' is a brilliant read. Within a couple of chapters I had started to fall in love with the characters. The humour throughout the book actually had me laughing out loud. The story moves at a good pace and there isn't any extraneous padding to the story. The mysterious woman in the book has me intrigued and I can't wait to read more.
This is a great read and crosses genre enough to appeal to a very large audience. Treat yourself, give this book a go, I don't think you will regret it.

I read this book unsure of what to expect. I had just finished The Girl in the Box series, and was curious to see of Robert J Crane could write another series that would have me so well and truly hooked. The answer was an unquestionable...YES! This book intertwines fantasy, with characters you can't help but warm to (as well as some you hate!). It's full of dry humour, as well as some some real laugh out loud moments...and some gore of course. I had to immediately download book 2 (which I'm hooked on!). If you haven't read any of Robert J Crane's books before, you must read this. If you have read GITB and are looking for a new drama, this is also for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Demons beware!!! 8 Sep 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
took this book not really with any high expectations. boy was I wrong and happy to admit it. brilliant balance of comedic moments interlaced with action just like in real-life, err with demons of course. Mr Crane tells an imaginative story in the vein of supernatural but with the wry understated humour of Terry Pritchett that leaves you wanting more... so I'm off to get more. keep up the good work Mr Crane, I'll be watching you...

Before I read this book, I had never heard of Robert J. Crane. So it was a bit of a gamble. But I found the story very riveting. It kept me very attentive from page 1. The only downside to it, is that it was too short. Never the less, I am hooked, and will be reading more.
