Product Description

Edward Woodward gives an electrifying performance as a reluctant professional killer working for British Intelligence. Callan became a national phenomenon in the late 1960s, making Woodward one of the highest profile actors on television and paving the way to his eventual career in America on shows like The Equalizer. Created by James Mitchell (When the Boat Comes In) and exploring the dingy, twilight world of the professional spy, Callan was the antithesis of James Bond (back in the days of Connery and Moore) and presented, until that point, television's most realistic portrayal of government espionage. This set contains: [] the original Armchair Theatre pilot play, A Magnum for Schneider [] all the remaining black and white episodes from series one and two [] all the colour episodes from series three and four [] the Callan: Wet Job play [] a brand new documentary [] definitive book on the making of the series by Andrew Pixley [] more TBC

5.0 out of 5 stars Is this ever going to be released? Ever? Ever? 28 Jun 2012

I ordered this box-set over a year ago. I'm a huge fan of 'Callan', all the episodes i've seen have been fantastic. Genuinely brilliant scripts, an incredibly intense central performance by Edward Woodward, an amazingly morally ambiguous and down-beat worldview, great mordantly funny lines - I can't wait for the thing to turn up.

So where is it? Every couple of months I check and the release date has been put back further and further. What are they waiting for? Are a team of monks hand-writing the special book that comes with it or something? Is it going to be some Book of Kells style effort? Are they redesigning the box? Have they got other priorities? What is the problem?

There is something really quite odd about putting something up for sale that is two years away (given the lastest - cough - expected delivery date, that's probably a fairly generous estimate) from being ready. Since I have ordered it regimes have fallen in Northern Africa, riots erupted in our major cities, the News of the World has folded, the Levenson enquiry has begun and will probably soon end, summer has come and gone, the recession has gone and come back again, empires have fallen - so where is it then? Arriving May 2013 is it? Is that an accurate date or one you got from consulting the stars?

3.0 out of 5 stars More orders needed to secure a release 21 April 2013
Here's how it works, as far as I understand it. The release is dependent on the number of advance orders. If not enough are received to make it financially viable, the release date is put back to allow time for more orders to come in. In this case, it can only be presumed that there are few orders. I suspect most fans of this great show will already have purchased the earlier box sets and it possible the new complete set will never see the light of day.
The same thing happened with Auf Weidersehen Pet, which was supposed to have a 25th anniversary box set release in 2008. It was regularly delayed and as of this moment, has not been released.

1.0 out of 5 stars Callan - a wasted opportunity 18 Feb 2013
Most of the cast in Callan are dead. Fewer and fewer people will be interested in buying this when it eventually hits the shelves. You can already get most of the episodes either from Amazon or on line. Whoever is behind this new DVD release is backing a financial dud by delaying it and with Amazon saying it will cost almost £90.00 it will gather lots of dust.

1.0 out of 5 stars Yet Another Changed Release Date 22 Feb 2013
Given up on waiting for this to be released and have bought the monochrome and colour years collections wich are both excellent. See the release date has now been put back to December 2020 by which time could well have shuffled off this mortal coil. Unbelievable!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Wait! Don't buy it ... Wait! 6 Jun 2011
I entirely agree with N. Green. In fact, anyone who is not visually disabled can see from the 'voting' on his review that it's a total set up! And if the same thing happens to this review also, well . . . please make your own mind up.

What a joke! Or what an insult to those who've already invested £30, £40, £50 in a drama they have loved and waited for, only to find that they've been cheated by a recycling of already released episodes which they've already purchased, along with a few additions tacked on and with an even higher price tag, of course!

Having myself purchased many DVD sets from Network (Strange Report, Department S, Jason King, The Baron, Man in a Suitcase, return of the Saint etc), this is the first review of this kind that I've written and I jolly well hope that it will be the last!

Like Mr Iredale, I suspect there's a new management policy afoot at Network! Don't buy it.

Go on, vote against what I say and prove that even loyal customers are being stitched up by Network!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not before time 26 Dec 2010
The pride of place is reserved on my shelf for this collection although I'm glad that I couldn't afford "The Colour Years" and waited. Yes, not unlike the other reviewer - with whom I sympathise (I invested in the monochrome collection instead) - but seeing some only whetted my palate to get the rest and obtaining this complete set which was announced far earlier than I would ever have expected in the general scheme of DVD releases is the way to go. No point hanging out for a Blu-Ray collection methinks...

3.0 out of 5 stars Forever Changing Release Date 8 Jun 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
I am surprised that this much anticipated box set is forever having the release date extended, the latest now delayed until April, 2013. No reasons for the delay are ever given, but I am surprised that amazon UK don't pressure Network DVD for a more definitive action. I can't remember when this item was originally slated for release, but it is coming close to 2 years now. I already own most of the collection, however I don't have the incomplete "Monochrome Years" and have held off purchasing that series in case more episodes are found and restored.

5.0 out of 5 stars see the other side 23 July 2011
it is very common for tv series to be released one by one and then as a whole-I do not have any Callan sets so quite like the idea of the whole. NETWORK DVD do a great job, release some stuff with very low sales, give them a break
