Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

In a nutshell:
After the last game became the best selling launch title for the Xbox 360, Activision aren’t wasting any time with the follow-up as you do you bit to help out with the Normandy breakout and the liberation of France.

The lowdown:
Despite the new digit in the title this isn’t so much a sequel to Call of Duty 2 on the 360 and PC as it is Call of Duty: Big Red One on the PS2, Xbox and GameCube. It’s by the same developer (Treyarch), there’s no PC version and it doesn’t feature three distinct armies, but instead a recreation of the Normandy breakout. That’s not to suggest it’s short on new ideas though with much larger levels than ever before and far more vehicles to control (particularly in the Battlefield like multiplayer mode). There’s also a new Resident Evil 4 style quick time event system for hand-to-hand combat where you have to hit specific buttons to sock it to the Nazi hordes.

Most exciting moment:
It may seem a bit shallow to go on about the game’s explosions but really, there’s never been anything as realistic as the fireworks in this game. The way the smoke moves is particularly amazing, even drifting in the wind or dispersing after a second nearby explosion.

Since you ask:
Although Activision has confirmed nothing yet they have hinted that original Call of Duty developers Infinity Ward are working on their own sequel, primarily for the PC. When it will come out and whether it will be translated to the next generation consoles is currently unknown.

The bottom line:
The best WII first person shooter looks to be getting even better.
HARRISON DENT

Manufacturer's Description
The follow-up to the #1 next-generation game, Call of Duty 3 delivers the intensity of being closer than ever to the fury of combat during the Normandy Breakout, the historic campaign that made the liberation of Paris possible and brought the Allies a step closer to Berlin. Through a seamless narrative that delivers the rush of unrelenting battle and breathtaking action, players assume the roles of four ordinary Allied soldiers American, British, Canadian and Polish and are thrust onto an authentic, living battlefield for an unprecedented variety of combat, with advanced high-definition graphics, detailed character animations and explosive on-screen action, delivering the most immersive and cinematically intense war experience ever.

The Power of next-gen:
Built from the ground-up for next-gen consoles, Call of Duty 3 brings the battle to life with advanced graphics, a new physics engine, a procedural environment and detailed ensemble animations that deliver the most cinematic war experience ever.

Battle actions:
An all-new close-quarters battle mechanic allows players to fight hand-to-hand, improvise explosive devices, disarm traps and execute a host of other battlefield situations that require cunning and rapid reflexes to survive.

Branching mission paths:
Next-generation level design provides multiple attack routes that let players decide how to confront the enemy flank an opponent, or hit him head-on. Each unique mission path requires special tactics, from sniping and demolition to all-out head-on clashes.

Nowhere to hide:
Environmental physics allow players to destroy enemy soft cover hideouts, forcing foes out in the open. But be wary, opponents can eliminate your protective cover as well.

Team-based multiplayer with vehicles:
Combined arms and team-based combat provides unprecedented depth and variety by allowing up to 24-players to battle it out online with the option of single or split-screen Internet play. Gamers have the choice to play as infantry or commandeer multiple-occupancy vehicles, including tanks, jeeps, and motorcycles with side-cars, leading to unique mobile combat roles for all-out, multiplayer mayhem. Call of Duty 3 also offers soldier classes, each with class specific abilities, and a ranking system for truly diversified squad combat.

5.0 out of 5 stars intense war shooter, 26 Feb 2007
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Any xbox owners looking for an exciting and realistic war
game should purchase this. The graphics are impressive on
a par even with 360 and ps3 versions although probably not
as polished.
Fabulous explosions with smoke effects accompany intense battles with planes flying overhead. After an initial training level
you are thrust into a cemetery where a ferocious battle is
taking place.
The game is linear, but their is no denying its an exciting
recreation of the normandy landings.
This is one of the last stand out titles for the xbox and is well worth a purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars C.o.d. 3 lesser brother to C o d 2, 3 Aug 2007

Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
Having played COD1 and COD2 I was really looking forward to COD3 but found myself somewhat letdown.True the graphics are good and the explosions fun but COD3 has some problems.Firstly is the cut scenes,MY GOD THEY GO ON AND ON AND ON! and you cant get out of them! you have to listen to the same "start of level" drivel every time you load in your game!.Why did they miss out the "jump to end" button?.
Collision detection is next,There are some serious shortcomings in this department. You can often clearly see your target, your gun muzzels is no where near the cover your hiding behind but your bullets are still hitting the wall or tank your hiding behind!(see stuart tank ,2nd lvl, beginning for good example.)Also you can often not shoot an enemy partially obscured by vegetation but they sure as hell can shoot you!.There are also areas and situations in which you can get "jammed" neccesitating a restart which is annoying,it is thankfully rare but happend to me twice.
I prefer COD2 for the single player campaign, its much smoother and feels more polished. Also you dont have to put up with the naff "hand to hand combat" sequence.I also liked the ability to jump out of windows or over walls too in COD2.I do like the ability to pick up and throw back the enemy grenades in COD3,thats a nice touch and quite useful.
I really play this game for the online gaming which i must admit I'm addicted to.Its just SO MUCH FUN!
There are some problems here too such as some players(quite rightly so)complaining in particular about some of the weapon options. The axis weapons tend to be a little(or alot, depending on combat class)out performed by the comparitive allied weapons. My particular pet hate is the MP44 heavy assult axis weapon. Why was such a coveted weapon by both sides in WW2 so rubbish in the game?.IF it was this crap in reality NOBODY would have wanted it!The online version is not as good as the campain one,its inaccurate and lacks stopping power and desperately needs a reworking/upgrade to address these faults .There are also some map gitches which certain poor players have to use to try to be any good at all in the game.removing those would be worth while and help keep down the aggro lvls when your up against cheats!.
One other improvement would be the ability to boot a player off who is making themselves a nuisence such as team killers, foulmouths and cheats.

However i do like this game, campaign and online, but would absolutely adore it if these problems were sorted out. However if you want a good single player game, go for COD2 but for online play go for COD3!
I look forward to COD4 with baited breath!hope fully they will have sorted out the problems found in COD3!
!
