Book Description

1 May 1992 Wordsworth Classics

This Wordsworth Edition includes an exclusive Introduction and Notes by Lionel Kelly, University of Reading.

The Call of the Wild (1903) and White Fang (1906) are world famous animal stories. Set in Alaska during the Klondike Gold Rush of the late 1890s, The Call of the Wild is about Buck, the magnificent cross-bred offspring of a St Bernard and a Scottish Collie. Stolen from his pampered life on a Californian estate and shipped to the Klondike to work as a sledge dog, he triumphs over his circumstances and becomes the leader of a wolf pack. The story records the 'decivilisation' of Buck as he answers 'the call of the wild', an inherent memory of primeval origins to which he instinctively responds. In contrast, White Fang relates the tale of a wolf born and bred in the wild which is civilised by the master he comes to trust and love.

The brutal world of the Klondike miners and their dogs is brilliantly evoked and Jack London's rendering of the sentient life of Buck and White Fang as they confront their destiny is enthralling and convincing. The deeper resonance of these stories derives from the author's use of the myth of the hero who survives by strength and courage, a powerful myth that still appeals to our collective unconscious.

Product Description

Review

"One hundred and one years after its publication, it is still enthralling. The opening chapters are haunting, their depiction of the wilderness of snow, ice and forest faced by gold prospectors exquisite and terrifying. The menace of ever-present death, for man, dog and wolf alike, in a setting of remorseless beauty, is bracing and humbling" (Herald)

"Raw narratives of visceral appeal whose cinematic energy cry out for film adaptation" (Robert McCrum Observer)

"A searing book about man and animals and the inherent wildness in the nature of the dog. It's a very stark book in some ways but it really conjures up the atmosphere of Gold Rush-era Yukon" (Daily Express) --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Two Ripping Yarns 9 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback
These are two great stories by Jack London from the times of the Klondike Gold Rush. These have often been shown on TV in a cartoon adaptation and this is often regarded as a children's book but there is plenty here to hold interest for the adult reader and the stories are more adult in their nature and themes when compared to the cartoons.

London often draws on his own experiences and it is well worth considering reading a Jack London Biography as his life story could be regarded as a `ripping yarn' itself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buck realizes his potential 18 Dec 2005
By bernie VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
Gold was found in Alaska, the rush to obtain it required a strong constitution and many dogs to do the work that horses usually did in the states. The environment bread harsh attitudes. Also in the testing of ones mettle one finds their true potential.

Buck (a dog that is half St Bernard and half Shepherd) goes through many lives, trials, and tribulations finally realizing his potential. On the way he learns many concepts from surprise, to deceit, and cunning; he also learns loyalty, devotion, and love. As he is growing he feels the call of the wild.

This book is well written. There is not a wasted word or thought and the story while building on its self has purpose and direction. The descriptions may be a tad graphic for the squeamish and a tad sentimental for the romantic. You see the world through Buck's eyes and understand it through his perspective until you also feel the call of the wild.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Dog's tale..... 27 Jan 2005
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
I found this book a little slow to start with, and it seemed to be going nowhere fast. However once the main character, the dog White Fang, was introduced it really gripped me. He is an excellent hound, tenacious and fierce yet with a huge capacity for loyalty and love. I enjoyed reading about his life from puppyhood onwards and all his many adventures. I would highly recommend this book. Great insight into the relationship between man and his best friend, perhaps more as it used to be than it is now.

Great stories, especially White Fang. May be a bit traumatic for younger readers but an engaging and emotional read. This edition is good as it contains both books and additional notes. the print is fairly small but I read it ok.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic 15 Nov 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am studying White Fang as a chosen book for a degree course. It is a classic. Brilliantly written, rolling in scope and pace and a beautiful edition. I was concerned at the size of the book because I have never ordered this type/size before BUT once I started reading it was the perfect size to carrying about and the quality is top notch.

Will definitely be buying more from the Collector's Library in the future.
