Book Description

The Call of the Wild, White Fang and Other Stories collects some of Jack London's most profound and moving allegorical tales. This Penguin Classics edition is edited by Andrew Sinclair with an introduction by James Dickey.

The Call of the Wild, London's masterpiece about a dog learning to survive in the wilderness, sees pampered pet Buck snatched from his home and set to work as a sled-dog. White Fang, set in the frozen tundra and boreal forests of Canada's Yukon territory, is the story of a wolf-dog struggling to survive in a human society every bit as violent as the natural world. This volume of Jack London's famed stories of the North also includes 'Batard', in which an abused dog takes revenge on his owner; and 'Love of Life', in which an injured prospector, abandoned by his partner, must struggle home alone through the wilderness, stalked by a lone wolf.

In his introduction, James Dickey probes London's strong personal and literary identification with the wolf-dog as a symbol and totem. Andrew Sinclair, London's official biographer and the volume's editor, provides a brief account of London's life as a sailor, desperado, socialist, adventurer and acclaimed author.

Jack London (1876-1916) was born John Griffith Chaney in San Francisco, California. By the age of sixteen he had left school, worked in a canning factory, spent time as an oyster pirate and been a member of the Fish Patrol in the San Francisco Bay. In 1893 he joined a sealing cruise, which took him as far abroad as Japan. In 1896 he was caught up in the gold rush to the Klondike river in north-west Canada, which became the inspiration for The Call of the Wild (1903) and White Fang (1906).

If you enjoyed The Call of the Wild, you might like Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories, also available in Penguin Classics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tonic for the soul 31 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I had read The Call of the Wild and other stories by Jack London as a child, and bought this copy for my son. I did in fact read it out loud to him and have to confess that I times I was so emotionally choked by the story that I had difficulty getting the words out. It's simply a breathtaking piece of writing, a cracking story and probably one of my all time favourites. I rarely read things twice but this is a novel to be re-visited again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vast and frozen wilderness captured on paper! 4 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
I would recommend reading this in the summer, or anywhere reliably warm, as the vividly described chill of the frozen Yukon will freeze you to the bone! From a writer's point of view, Jack London's personal experiences as an adventurer add a depth of understanding he imparts in a way no normal author could achieve. Any dog lovers will also enjoy these stories which are told from the point of view of the canine characters. What I find amazing is the freshness of the style of writing which belies the stories' age, being as they are about a hundred years old. Mind you, the lack of modern clothing, equipment and GPS certainly add to the compelling thrill of these ripping yarns!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wolves and Wild Dogs 16 Feb 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Jack London writes about some unique stories, often following a series of dog and how they cope with elements of the wild. Themes throughout his stories include questioning our relationship with nature and how we perceive it. A brilliant read and a compilation of some of his best works.

4.0 out of 5 stars Glorious. 24 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
I loved reading this book. I'm going through a bit of a phase of wanting to live and forage in the wild! Haha! So this book really struck a chord with me. I could really imagine being a dog returning to the wild! Excellent. Great book, if that's your kind of thing.
