About the Author

Jack London (1876-1916) was born John Chaney in Pennsylvania, USA and despite a lack of education in his childhood, and a variety of odd jobs, he always maintained his love of books. In 1896 he was caught up in the gold rush to the Klondike river in north-west Canada which became the inspiration for his story, The Call of the Wild, published in 1903, and followed by White Fang in 1906. Jack London became one of the most widely read writers in the world.

`The Call of the Wild' follows Buck, a strong, dignified dog as he is torn from his home and taken to pull sled in the Yukon during the gold rush. It is written mainly from a dogs point of view which makes for original and interesting reading and shows how Buck gradually creeps back to his primordial and hereditary roots as a wild dog. This is only a short book but you are quickly drawn into Bucks world and viewpoint and before you know it the last page has been turned and you are left both satisfied and saddened to have finished. Written in simple, yet richly descriptive, language this book is aimed at children, although adults can get as much, if not more, from it as younger readers can. Having heard about this book for years but never getting round to reading it, I can say that it was a delight to pick up and immerse myself in and I only wish I had done so sooner. A classic wilderness tale and one well worth checking out.

This is a very short novel which reminded me about the wilderness and that ancient way of being, wild and free in nature, which made it worth reading in itself. It's a simple enough story about a dog returning to his wolf roots but I find the simplest concepts can be the most insightful and appealing.

This is a well written, interesting classic which I definately recommend to anyone with an interet in nature/the wilder side of things.

The story of a dog, Buck, who is kidnapped and sold into slavery is both a great animal story and a gripping read.
Buck lives with a family in Santa Clara Valley and lives a peaceful yet unfulfilling life. All this changes very quickly however...

By page 4, he is taken away by the treacherous servant, Manuel and, ten pages later, he is sold to the first of many owners, digging for gold in the klondike strike who intend to use him to pull a sled with many assorted dogs some friends, others foes.

Through the eyes of Buck, Jack London paints a great and terrible portrait of the harsh realities both man and dog faced through the snowy peaks of Alaska, often with fateful consequences. London also reveals incredible knowledge of the wildlife adventures of wolves and Buck's interactions with them are spine-tinglingly wonderful.

Buck has a hard life; he is made to work day after day without rest,is injured several times which are often nearly fatal and sees many harrowing and sad happenings.

No two characters, be they human or animal are the same; they are good, evil, clever, stupid and above all; believable!

The introduction by Melvin Burgess is decent and the illustrations by Martin Gascoigne are even better! Some of the greatest drawings I have ever seen in this great series of books, and indeed, any book!

I have had a cold recently, and picked up this book, which I got for Christmas. Like Buck's wolf-like behaviour; I devoured this book within 24 hours as it was a short read but a real page turner!

I can't wait to read White Fang!

I would recommend this book to any dog or animal lover!
