Product Description

Conceived as a fantasia depicting a day in a Kashmiri village, Call of the Valley is predicated on the deliciously simple, yet at the time radical, idea of marking the passage of the day with ragas appropriate to the hour. Together with the de facto producer G.N. Joshi, they worked out a sequence of ragas to project the story. Opening with the early morning raga "Ahir Bhairav", Kabra's guitar announces daybreak. Shortly afterwards, Chaurasia's bansuri (bamboo flute) picks up Kabra's sunrise theme. Just under two minutes into "Ahir Bhairav" Sharma's santoor (a trapezoid-shaped hammer dulcimer) joins in. As the defining instrument of Kashmir, santoor places the action firmly in a landscape of mountains and lakes. "Ahir Bhairav" gives way to "Nat Bhairav". "Piloo", "Bhoop", "Des" and "Pahadi" follow. Originally released in the late 1960s, this masterpiece has remained in catalogue with the Gramophone Company of India ever since. That alone speaks volumes. The remastered Hemisphere edition has three additional track, one apiece from each principal soloist. Call of the Valley has probably awakened more people to Hindustani music than any other single recorded project. That is the measure of its importance and accessibility. --Ken Hunt

A real 'find' this one. I bought this via its inclusion in "1001 Albums To Hear Before You Die" and its discovery, alone, justifies the purchase of the book.

Although unmistakably Indian in origin(and is indeed classified as Indian classical music), the music is, nonetheless, instantly appealing in a way that reaches beyond national boundaries. Most people would be familiar with the Indian music of Sitar and Tabla. So perhaps the most immediately striking thing is the prominence of the Kashmiri Santoor(a hammered dulcimer) and flute which, along with Guitar and Tabla weave their, sometimes complex and at others simple, but always gorgeous, patterns, together.

The music is beautifully soothing and relaxing but never threatens to fall into muzak territory, rather it has a gentle intensity which focuses the listeners attention while allowing them to be carried off to some other place...It is also very engaging, never 'difficult'.

I certainly don't consider myself any sort of an expert on Indian classical music and some will tell you that there are greater works and finer examples of the form but even those people would agree that this is an excellent introduction to the genre. Regardless of category It is certainly some of the most incredible music I have heard in a long time.

This collection has a number of combinations of indian instruments and formats.
In all cases the musicianship is excellent and the combinations provide a great display of the various sounds of India.
WEhilst I enjoy this collection very much for the purist seeking the beguiling sound of the santoor then look elsewhere for Pandit Shivkumar Sharma and in particular the collection of him playing with his father.

The way in which this album is recorded and produced in combination with how purely and naturally the musicians weave their music together makes this album just something else. One of the most captivating albums I have ever bought.

In between western music, I listen to classic indian music once in a while. And this album is by far the one there appeals most to me. It is brilliant. Right up there with the best recordings of western classical music or the best recordings in jazz like Miles Davis 'Kind of Blue'. If you know what I mean, I'm sure you will enjoy this album as much as I do.

I enjoy listening to this recording in the evenings. It is beautiful music - all instrumental and wonderfully balanced and subtle.
