North Atlantic Oscillation have been described as prog-pop and electro-rock, but really they just make music. The music has soaring harmonies and loud guitars and dreamy synths and heavy drums and strange effects and unexpected changes-of-mind. "Call Signs" is band's debut release and provides the perfect introduction to the band prior to the release of their full-length debut album, "Grappling Hooks", in early 2010. The 4 track EP features a radio edit of the lead track 'Cell Count' along with 'Ceiling Poem' (both taken from 'Grappling Hooks') a cover of 'I Only Have Eyes For You' and '77 Hours' remixed by Kscope label mates Engineers.
Review
`An astonishing amalgam of Flaming Lips and Grandaddy indie-pop sensibilities with a bewildering vista of sound sweeping ahead of the listener... Acid-addled, silver-caped prog genius.' * * * * * -- Is This Music?
This space-rocking, be-bopping, genre-hopping Edinburgh trio's debut EP is an ambitious affair. With two originals, a cover and a remix (courtesy of Kscope label mates Engineers), it may not sound substantial, but stylistically there's a lot going on. Opening track, Cell Count is a joyously cosmic electronic cut - equal parts Flaming Lips and FOUND - which has just enough hook to prevent it from floating away on the breeze. It makes way for Ceiling Poem, which despite being a meatier, more frenzied effort, doesn't quite match the heights of its predecessor. NAO's cover version of choice speaks volumes about their promise; their take on `50s doo-wop number I Only Have Eyes For You by The Flamingos is tuneful, experimental and a lush show-stopper.
I bought this because I had also ordered NAO's stunning "Grappling Hooks" album. Call Signs is an EP - 3 of the tracks are earlier arrangements/performances of material from Grappling Hooks, the fourth is a bit of a shock, a cover of the 1950's doo-wop ballad "I Only Have Eyes for You". All excellent stuff - recommended. Spooky harmony vocals, faintly disturbing lyrics and clever, intricately crafted instrumentals. It is irritating when people try to list other "sounds like" acts, but I can hear all sorts of retro stuff in there as well as the usual list - Floyd and Genesis for a start - an impression which is strengthened by the use of what sound like 1970s synths. Brilliant.
