5.0 out of 5 stars In short, one of the best 5 songs they've ever recorded..., 20 Oct 2007
By A.A.C.M (Essex) - See all my reviews

Still flushed with the success of a 16th consecutive Top 10 hit (Sexy! No, No, No...) the girls now get back into the full flow of promotional onslaught with the second single from their hotly anticipated fourth studio album "Tangled Up".

What you immediately trigger is that this is not as brash and loud as Sexy! was, in fact, it's the complete opposite (but in a good way), and to some extent, perhaps better. The tear stained tale of a doomed relationship, "Call The Shots" has, without a shadow of a doubt, got to be the girls' most heart rendering vocal performance (Nicola especially) showcase since "Whole Lotta History".

Though a bit more dreamier than some of their previous singles, it is still good for having a good old boogie to, and indeed, the Tony Lamezma remix emphasises this strongly. As ever, the video is also fantastic, with them all kitted out in purple on Malibu Beach at night, and some quite AMAZING special effects (such as, when the line "fade like starlight" is sung, the stars in the sky fade - WOW).

Overall, I'd say this is a grower, but it does grow into a song that you'll love a lot and soon realise is one of the 5 best singles they've ever recorded and released. Another Top 10 or I'll eat my hat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smart, mature, sophisticated., 3 Nov 2007
By J. A. Cummins (Southampton, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Following the brilliantly trashy "Sexy! No, No, No" comes "Call The Shots", a song that showcases just how far Cheryl, Nadine, Nicola, Kimberly and Sarah have come in their growth in music. Beautifully sung (with Nicola's middle eight being a stunning stand-out) this deserves 5 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Girls Aloud Song, But Reviews Below Are Over The Top!!, 13 Nov 2007
First of all I want to say that I love Girls Aloud. I like all of their singles (with the exception of "See The Day, Life Got Cold and Whole Lotta History") and this is another excellent single from the girls.

Personally I prefered the last single "Sexy! No No No" but this is definatly up there with the best of their singles and I shall definetly be getting their new Album.

What I do want to say however is, the reviews written about this single are very over the top! I know you are all fans guys and you want to support the girls, but come on! We all know the Girls Aloud are not known for their deep lyrics (and they don't even write their own songs, with the exception of Sexy! No No No) and they they are also not known for their amazing voices. They are known for being a fun, energetic, excellent girl band.
The video is not very good for this song and the person below comments on "amazing special effects" when the starts go blurry? It's cheap as anything and you can do that on a Windows computer programme! It's a far cry from, some of their excellent videos like "Biology", "The Show" or "Sexy, No No No".
The singing is good in the song, but its nothing special and people harping on about "Nicola's solo performance" toward the end of the song being "amazing" and "heart rendering" COME ON!! She only sings a couple of lines, and its just basic singing! Considering that she has spent most of her time hidden behind the other girls in previous singles and NOW she is singing a little bit, big deal! It doesn't make her Mariah Carey or something!

Don't get me wrong, I love the song and love the girls. I've been to see them twice in concert, I have all their albums and singles and would call myself a true fan. However, I'm also and honest fan and see Girls Aloud for what they are.

Keep up the good work Girls!
