Format: Paperback
1948's "Call for the Saint" marks a partial, but nonetheless welcome, return to the old (1930s) Saint from the sanitised and lobotomised G-man of the War years.

In the first story, set in Chicago, the Saint works to find the brain behind a protection racket; in the second, he unravels the mystery behind the rise of an apparently talentless New York boxer.

Both stories, unusually at this late date, also feature Patricia Holm and Hoppy Uniatz — the latter in particularly fine form.

P.S. For a list of all Charteris's Saint books (in two sections, because of length limitations) see my Listmanias.

Call for the Saint consists of two lengthy novellas - a form of which Charteris was a master, and which the rise of the e-reader has brought back into fashion. I know this is a later Saint book that's considered minor by some, but it has a special place in my affections; King of the Beggars harks back to the tough and lively prewar Charteris stories, while boxing tale The Masked Angel spawned a memorable and light-touch episode in the Roger Moore TV series . A good introduction to the character, if you need one.
