Review

The New York Times "Whether this author is telling of clipper ships, of the days of the covered wagon, of the South Sea Islands, he writes always with imagination and integrity. Like all hero legends Mafatu's story has a strength and simplicity that appeals to a wide range in age and it is beautifully told. Mr. Sperry's fine drawings have the same spirit of adventure as the story and enhance the feeling of tropical seas and jungle given in the text. The story reads aloud well and will be useful to storytellers." --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

Mafatu's name means "Stout Heart," but his people call him a coward. Ever since the sea took his mother's life and spared his own, he has lived with deep fear. And even though his father is the Great Chief of Hikueru--an island whose seafaring people worship courage--he is terrified, and consequently, he is severely scorned. By the time he is twelve years old, Mafatu can bear it no longer. He must conquer his fear alone. . . even if it means certain death. This classic tale of a young boy's hidden strength has been a favorite of readers of all ages since its 1940 publication--now this exclusive audio preserves its original poignancy and splendor, and brings Mafatu to life for future generations of listeners.

Mafatu lives in Polynesia. He has been afraid of the ocean since being a young child.
Now his peers are teasing and saying cruel things to him about his fear. He knows
that he must overcome his fear, so he sails out alone on the sea to prove to all that he
is brave. This is an exciting tale of courage of a young boy who is trying to prove that
he has a "stout heart." Enjoyable! written by Bob Townsend

wonderful adventure 8 May 2009
Format:Paperback
I have just read this book to my two boys, 9 and 7 years old and they loved it. They were gripped by the adventure of Mafatu and how he conquered his fear of the sea. It's very well written with wonderful descriptions. They didn't want the book to end and were so drawn into the story.

inspirational reading 21 Jan 2005
Format:Hardcover
This book was a favourite of mine as a child. I am now reading it to my 8-year old daughter at bedtime, and she keeps reading ahead to find out what is going to happen next! She loves the thrilling story, the wonderful engravings, and the beautifully-described details of the sea and Polynesian life. I had forgotton (or, as a child, failed to appreciate) the sheer beauty of Sperry's writing. It is simple enough for a child to read and enjoy, but not childish. The descriptions of the volcanic islands and atolls of the South Pacific are haunting. A great book for an imaginative child, especially a boy!
