As a newly converted SEP fan, I have inhaled all her books over the past few weeks. This has prepared me well enough for Call Me Irresistible. I was familiar with the characters, and was really looking forward to reading about Teddy, Meg, and Lucy.
Now I am very strict "marker" (although some of you won't agree), and naturally I had high expectations. Who didn't fall in love with Teddy in Fancy Pants, and then Lady Be Good?
So with my extremely high expectations in mind, I will be generous to say it wasn't SEP's best, but it was good enough for me.
Potential Spoiler Alert:
The Highs:
1. You see Meg's point of view (POV) first. You have no idea of what Teddy is feeling until the last few chapters. Now some people may think this is actually a "low" but here's why I think it was brilliant. Everybody already loves Ted. Ted is perfect. You loved him in the previous books. No one knows what to think about Meg though. So naturally, we need some time to get to know Meg.
Ted is painted throughout the book as Mr. Level-Headed. You get an occasional glimpse of emotion (cleverly written) every now and then; a little bubble here and there; but basically, you don't get any insights into Mr. Cool until the end. Which means, that when you finally do, it's telling. Your connection with Teddy then, is instant.
2. You get to see that your favourite characters from the previous books are still as flawed as ever, and true to form. Just because they are in love and happily married doesn't mean that they don't do silly things (like do to Meg what others have done to them).
The Lows:
1. Well, to be honest, I thought the relationship's beginning was slightly contrived. I don't know whether this was because we didn't see Teddy's POV, but I guess this was one of the side effects. Once they settled in, it got better, but that first kiss didn't knock me off my feet (sorry SEP!!).
And I think that's it for me. Why 3 stars though? 2 highs to 1 low should surely warrant a 4. Well, that's the stingy marker in me. I had these awfully high expectations and all...
