Review

"An unexpected gift from a dead author to his admirers" John Sutherland, Sunday Times; "Carver's technique was masterful and deft; but it is the characters - heroes, in their way - of his tales that make them great and lasting works" Erica Wagner, The Times; "Carver the writer is still the hero of this story, as this "last of the last" abundantly proves" Bharat Tandon, TLS; "In Call if You Need Me, generosity and fidelity to his characters shine from every page....In his style, Carver may have affinities with Hemingway, but his portrayal of relationships is deeper and more nuanced than anything the old bullfighter ever committed to print" Toby Mundy, New Statesman

Product Description

A new collection containing previously unpublished stories that show Carver at the peak of his powers as a contemporary master of American fiction. When he died in August 1988, Raymond Carver had just published what were thought to be his last stories in his own selection, Where I'm Calling From. This new volume brings together all of his uncollected fiction, including three late stories only recently discovered in his house in Port Angeles, a fragment of a novel, five early stories, and all of his non-fiction prose, including his last essay "Friendship", about a London reunion with Richard Ford and Tobias Wolff. The five "new" stories are wonderful examples of his late open style, while the non-fiction prose includes all of the essays, together with occasional commentary on his own fiction and poetry, writings on the American short story, and reviews of work by his contemporaries, including Donald Barthelme, Richard Brautigan, Jim Harrison, Thomas McGuane and Richard Ford. Call if you Need Me: The Uncollected Writings takes us into Carver's workshop, and completes the picture of one of the most original writers of his generation in the English language.

3.0 out of 5 stars The "DVD extra's" of Carver Oeuvre, 5 April 2009
I guess this is sort of like the DVD extras of Carver's work. 5 posthumously discovered stories typical of Carver's mid to late style - 'Kindling' was especially good I thought - as well as a collection of early stories, which perhaps aren't really up to par with his later work. There are also some essays, meditations and introductions to various bits and bobs. Are introductions ever really of any great interest to anyone? I usually just glance at the first paragraph and then skip to the beginning. Although, having said that I did find Tess Gallagher's introduction to this book interesting.
This isn't essential Carver but it helps develop a fuller picture of the great writer in the same way 'All of Us', his collected poems, does.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Patchy reminder of a great talent, one for completionists, 26 May 2005

This review is from: Call If You Need Me (Hardcover)
I'm not sure about the problems of authenticity but this is typical of these kind of books. There are some pieces that really do hit you between the eyes and remind you what a truly fine writer Carver was. And there's a lot of more obscurer stuff that simply falls well short of his more enduring work.

Nevertheless, if you are a fan of Carver then this is worth getting and reading,. but overall the books main function is to remind you how greta the man was, and to encourage you to re-read the really great stuff.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't judge this book by its cover, 5 Sep 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Call If You Need Me (Hardcover)
There are only five new stories in this volume, and three of them may not even be completely Raymond Carver's work. Several reviewers have questioned their authenticity. The rest is all reprinted material from NO HEROICS PLEASE. So don't waste your money unless you are a true-blue Carver fan. The book is beautifully printed and looks nice on the shelf next to Carver's collected poems, which has a similar binding in hardcover.
