Amazon.co.uk Review

If your perception of David Duchovny is entirely gleamed from his stint on The X-Files, then it’s fair to say that Californication might prove to be something of a shock. Far more in line with the actor’s grounding in more comedic (and slightly more raunchy) productions, Duchovny plays writer Hank Moody, a man surrounded by drink, drugs, sex and a multitude of problems.

Moody is constantly battling against writers’ block, as well as trying to keep his daughter and ex-girlfriend content. But Californication’s second season tones down the comedy elements that helped define the first so well, in favour of taking a slightly more serious look at the chaos that surrounds Moody. That’s not to say it surrenders its laughs--far from it, in fact--just that it’s less laugh out loud funny than first time around.

But there are still many, many strong moments to Californication’s second run, and while there are inevitably those who favour the tone of the first, by end of season two the subtle changes are paying dividends. You do have to cut the show some slack with some of its more obvious narrative devices, but Californication ultimately lives and dies on the strengths of its characters, and Duchovny has found a terrific use for his talents with Hank Moody.

Where will the show go with season three? A good question, that will be answered in due course, no doubt. For now, you can’t accuse Californication of taking a safe option, and its second season is a fine piece of television. --Jon Foster

I can't recommend this DVD highly enough! Its certainly in my opinion Duchovny's finest performance, it has now overtaken my image of his definitive role.

After buying the first series on a bit of a shopping spree, i realised that i had discovered one of the sharpest and slickest comedies on television to date. I think i must have watched the DVD within 2 days of recieving it because i was that hooked.
So of course when i discovered that series 2 was being aired shortly after i had ploughed through the first installment i could barely wait for my next fix. It certainly matched up to, and exceeded my expectations.

Without spoiling the plot lines for you i think the only way i can describe Californication is a blend of hilarious and often fairly vulgar lines, amazingly awkward situations that will have you in hysterics and the magic of Hank Moody's pure style. You just can't help but love the guy.

My favourite comedy of the past few years.

I ploughed through season 1 in 1 day and as soon as I recieved season 2 I was eagar to resume my marathon, however whilst watching the first episode I felt that some of the chemistry had gone and I wasn't sure the good stuff was going to continue.
How wrong was I, although there is a big shift in the story line this season, give it a chance to get going , I think by the end I actually enjoyed his season even more than the first!

I would have to say no. The pure shock value of S1 is obviously impossible to recreate again, with all the main characters settled in series 2 had a very hard act to follow. Hank is such a great character he would be worth watching painting a wall let alone the predicaments he finds himself in. With the introduction of music producer and lothario Lew Ashby, Hank has found someone that is perhaps even more Hank than Hank himself, a wonderful blend which actually allows you to realise Hank's moral ceiling and his more tender side.
In closing I would highly recommend series 2, if you liked series 1 you'll buy it anyway and for those people go ahead you'll love it! Come on Showtime get series 3 out on DVD soon!

Yawn
I must admit that I quite enjoyed the sardonic black humour that characterised the first series of Californication and in spite of the (what seemed to me) anachronistic ending, I... Read more

Another entertaining series; only a few minor mistakes.
As with the fisrt season Californication series 2 is littered with short bursts of brilliance. The script is written well and the characters have come to show their true colours. Read more

He's still such a bad boy!
It makes me feel good that they kept Hank a bad boy. That he didn't clean up his act and still was and is notorious bad boy in the second season. Read more
