Amazon.co.uk Review
The concept of the laid-back sound of
California Soul has been going as long as soul music has been around, celebrated most famously in the classic Marlena Shaw song of the same name. This album, compiled lovingly by Adrian Gibson from the established and upcoming stable of modern California soul playas, may not be the same sort of California Soul that Marlena sang about 30-odd years ago, but it's just as infectious and enjoyable. Whilst describing the contents as 'soul music' may offend purists, the contents certainly warrant further investigation for the open minded connoisseur. Throughout the album, we're treated to a series of fantastic voices and lyrics, from the catty, but slinky opening that is "Hard Act to Follow" by Star 69 to Plantlife's vocal Prince-esque "Beautiful Babies"- exclusive to this compilation. Established names come off just as good as Blackalicious shine on the cheekily-titled but accurate "Aural Pleasure" and Lucy Pearl funks us silly on "Don't Mess with My Man". From start to finish, the beats are light and the grooves stay tight from start to finish, making this album perfect for open-top cruising in the summer time, and should appeal to both soul and hip-hop fans alike.
