This is the first book by Ray Banks that I've read, but I'll definitely be buying some more now. I think we've the Kindle to thank for the fact that a lot more shorter works and novellas by writers of all kinds are now appearing, but especially crime. this is actually a paperback but I'm rediscovering the joys of shorter works lately. Banks tells the story of hard man Shuggie Boyle, a touch but touching character whose ambition it is to get out of California in Falkirk, Scotland, and make it to the California of everyone's dreams.
To get there he needs to get his share of the stash from the bank robbery that put him inside, but the money's missing and he needs to track it down. He also has to learn how to control his temper, which he knows has been his downfall too many times in the past. The writer really gets you into Shuggie Boyle's head (which is not always a comfortable place to be), and I think Ray Banks is up there with other 'tartan noir' crime writers like Allan Guthrie.
