This book was indispensible on my recent trip round California. The book has 24 suggested routes each returning to its start point, based out of L.A, San Francisco, Sacremento, the national parks and a few other cities, but we found these are easily adapted to your needs/preferences.
The information in the itineries was excellent - especially in determining how far we could travel and picking a suitably scenic route instead of the freeway - and listed many places that we would otherwise have driven straight past (lonely planet/rough guide don't cover everything). Don't know how far we would have got without it.

I agree with all that the previous reviewer has said. Its easy to use & adaptable. I've not given it top rating because a little more general driving info would be useful. For instance at the majority of junctions you can turn right even on a red - which as a US driving novices we didn't know.
You also need to partner the book with another guide with more info on hotels etc, and/or local info from tourist offices.
Its a great starting point though.
