Calexico at The Barbican centre was the best gig I'd ever been to and I was really pleased to see that it's available for all to watch. The band played really well, but it wasn't until they were joined by Mariachi Luz De Luna, about halfway through the set, that the evening really took off. It was a real thrill when the maricachis came on stage in full regalia, they added something special to the sound - a real shot in the arm.
There were so many encores! My only regret with this dvd is that it cuts out a song where the trumpet players kept appearing in the audience and dueted with the Calexico trumpet player on stage. That was a really great moment, but presumably it wasn't caught on film/the sound quality was no good.
At any rate the gig was a five star event, and is excellently filmed.

The extras on this dvd are superb. There's two short documentaries: one about the recording of Calexico's new album, another about mariachi called 'The Soul of Mariachi.' There's an interview with the band (which I haven't watched yet, so can't report on), a short cartoon called 'El Kabong Rides Again' set to the music of Minas De Cobre. Then there's the videos to Crystal Frontier, The Black Light and The Ballad of Cable Hogue. There's a couple of other things. But surely that's convinced you to buy this dvd, right?

This is probably the best live DVD of a band i have ever seen. Calexico are a great band and this show just seals it as great live performers and excellent musicians. The extras are also brilliant with a tour of the studio that they made 'Feast of Wire' in and interviews with the mariachi band they use to tour with. If you are new to Calexico best thing to get would be this DVD and the album 'The Black Light'. You will definately wont be disappointed.
