This is a truly rewarding calendar which adds a little sparkle to every new day. We only discovered it in 2010 but are now firmly hooked. It's a tear-off pad type, with a Zen saying for each day.
We try a different philosophical theme (book, sayings, diary, etc) every year, and sometimes they can be trite, trivial, sentimental or just plain whacky. Very often they don't offer much in the way of a genuine window on the spiritual world.
But this one is great. It strikes a delicate balance between mystical and practical, offering useful hints and tips on how to meditate alongside thoughtful quotations which express the nature of Zen philosophy. The quotes are from varied sources, so if one type of interpretation doesn't strike a chord with you then you should find enough alternative views to stimulate your thoughts and meditations. Some quotes are short, just a couple of lines which can perfectly capture an idea, while others are mini-parables which run for a few paragraphs. Some are traditional and ancient, others are completely up to date examples from modern writers. All of them provide an opportunity to stop amid the daily grind and just be, for a moment.
Particularly appropriate sayings can be sent to friends too, or stuck on a pinboard to remind you of what happened that day, and what may be just around the corner.
A very rewarding calendar indeed; a gift worth far more than its purchase price...

This has been a regular purchase for me. Each day's pithy non-faith based thought, varies between clarifying intuitive knowledge, challenging perceived wisdom and being intriguingly puzzling. It moves from gentle to jolting ; it is never trite and well worthwhile.

May be Frank Zappa, Heraclitus, Leonardo da Vinci, Gothe, Hesse and others, quoted in this calendar, are Zen Buddhists and may be their quotes are inspirational, however this is not exactly what you expect when you buy a Zen calendar. Some quotes don't make much sense at all as they seem to be randomly cut out of context, like one on 8th January for example - ''If you are forbidden to travel by night but must arrive by dawn? (Pen-Ming)'' Does it make sense?

We have been using this calendar for the last seven years and can't now imagine a year without it. The daily messages are food for thought: a great way to start the day!

wise and inspiring 10 Dec. 2010
By michela Bondardo - Published on Amazon.com
Yes, I started buying it four years ago and I found it inspiring . so much so that I am giving it as a present to my best friends. Life is so complex that these ancient words full of wisdom help us to read reality as it is and not as this crazy contemporary world wants us to believe

5 stars, it's a great daily calendar 27 Dec. 2010

This is my 2nd year for the daily Zen calendar. It's a good mix of the standard Eastern Religion stuff, combined with a lot of Zen-like quotes from Western thinkers/writers/philosophers. Definitely enough to make you think, and some really good one-liners to keep on hand.

Highly recommended.
Reliable daily Zen 12 Jan. 2011

The Zen Page-a-Day Calendar - always reliable and a necessary way to start the year. The instructions re: sitting seem a bit repetitive, but having this calendar is a little like going to church. You don't expect the message to change from week to week, but it's pretty clear a reminder is a very good thing. I get this calendar EVERY year, even though I can almost never find it in stores.

I get this calendar for my Dad every year. He can't seem to get enough Zen quotes. I like it because it's a nice gift and he really seems to enjoy it. He sometimes sends me some of the quotes that he especially likes and they seem thoughtful and sometimes inspirational. The holidays are right around the corner, so I'll be ordering another one before Christmas rolls around.

I love my Zen page a day calendar! Todays: "God made the senses turn outwards, man therefore looks outwards,
not into himself, but occasionally a daring soul, desiring immortality, has looked back and found himself."
The Upanishads

Awesome :)
