This book is execelant. There are so many practice questions, so it builds up confidence. All the really hard topics, like electrode potentials are explained really well. This book has really helped me a lot. If you want to do well, as in your aiming for an 'A' grade, then this is the book you should get.

Calculations are not my strong point, and many other Chemistry students that I know feel the same, so I was delighted to find this book. Calculations can't be learnt just by reading, they need practice and lots of it. But all the other textbooks I used were hopeless, with confusing explanations, one or no examples, and maye one or two questions. Calculations for A-Level Chemistry is a God-send. It covers all areas of all syllabuses, from mole calculations to reaction kinetics. Don't be put off by it's dense appearance. Each type of calculation is included, with lots of examples, each with the method clearly explained, and then heaps of pracice questions, with answers in the book. Use it to build up confidence and to practice before exams. It begins with really basic maths advice and practice, so even the shakiest mathematician should be able to master nasty problems with a little work. Being able to perform calculations confidently and correctly can up your grade a great deal, and make you feel much happier when entering the exam hall, so I would say that this book is a must have for any Chemistry student nervous about the numerical side of the subject. It isn't necessarily a simple book, but if you're prepared to work through it with patience, then it will pay off.

The concept of the book IS good, all the A-level calculations you need to know in one book? Perfect.

Unfortunately however, this book doesn't quite deliver. Explanations are often confusing, and I have found far too many calculation mistakes for it to be called "Reliable,". It's fantastic in the sense that it does give you loads of questions to practise on, and does show you a few worked examples, but I have found that the worked examples don't have much of a step-by-step guide with them, and lack explanation of WHY we do certain things to get the result.

It's OK for what it is, but once I bought Calculations in AS / A Level Chemistry, I never looked back. The major difference being, that the book I have linked, assumes you have no calculations knowledge, and therefore really gives you the basics, easy, and simple. It's also full of hints and it feels like I am being talked through it, rather then talked AT as it is with Ramsdens book.
