Tactics: Calculation and Evaluation for the Intermediate Player

A wonderful and different kind of tactics book for the Intermediate or even somewhat Advanced chess player. This is not a tactics workbook (that has lots of problems to solve - useful in its own way) nor a book on chess traps (useful for learning chess tactics during the opening stage - also useful in its way) but a book that:
1. Offers tactical situations and shows the thinking process to calculate to SEE AHEAD.
2. Helps you learn intuition and to evaluate the end result (this is a difficult subject).
Mr. Beim covers in this book what most other tactics or traps books do not! Very worthwhile to get if you are at least an Intermediate Player.

Great book but the title is misleading

This book should be called "Appreciation of Chess Tactics"
rather than "How to Calculate..." because this is not a chess tactics
workbook at all. The game examples are beautiful and the author's
commentaries about each game and essays about tactical themes
really convey chess beauty and excitement but you will not find
cookbook exercises or checklists of how to set up tactical themes here.
I gave it four stars because it did heighten my appreciation of the game
but it lost that last star because I feel that in a book whose title
is "How To Do Something" should actually teach you step by step
how to do that thing.
rather than "How to Calculate..." because this is not a chess tactics
workbook at all. The game examples are beautiful and the author's

Excellent book

This book is not like your typical tactics book which discusses pins forks, skewers etc, nor is it a workbook of puzzles. the book does have some puzzles which are used to quiz what you have studied.
this book is an excellent book for intermediate players looking to become advance players. Its sort of the missing link to the next level. its meant for those who already understand the basic tatical motifs and combinational motifs. this book deals with subtle tactics, that is silent moves that lead to a tactical blow. So many of the games he discussed a crucial point where silent moves are required to create a combination or tactical blow.
this book changed my perspective of play. I would play base on major and minor peice positions and try to create a tactical advangtage, but after studying the the book I now added pawns to my play and have been making subtle moves that lead to the collapse of my opponent.
The book is well, written the games used to illustartye the ideas are facinating, and learning subtle tactics will be one of the greatest weapons in your arsenal. Highly recommend this book to any intermediate level player who is stuck at that level but want to move on to the next level.
