Product Description

Product Description

Santiago Calatrava is master of form. This book features Calatrava's exquisite fusion of architecture, art and engineering. Santiago Calatrava is not only one of the world's most prominent architects, but also an engineer and an artist. With recent projects such as the stadiums for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens or the new railway station in Liege, Belgium, he has reached a level of undeniable notoriety in Europe and continues to move further ahead. The only architect ever to have his work exhibited at both the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, he recently completed the main transportation hub for Ground Zero in Manhattan as well as the tallest building in the United States: the 160-story Chicago Spire Tower. Winner of the 2005 American Institute of Architects Gold Medal as well as numerous other prestigious awards, Calatrava is one of the greatest and most innovative architects alive. He collaborated extensively with Philip Jodidio in the preparation of this monograph that retraces his career thus far and places his architecture in the context of his art, where nature meets engineering. All of Calatrava's work, from his astonishing suspended swimming pool at Zurich's Federal Institute of Technology to his latest, startling designs, is featured in this lavishly illustrated volume. This updated, more compact version of the XL edition includes the LRT bridge in Jerusalem as well as new pictures of Calatrava's most recent projects including the World Trade Center Transportation Hub.

Format:Hardcover
This book presents 40 works of the Spanish architekt, from bridges and subway stations to opera houses (Valencia) and very original skyscrapers (which however - with the exception of the turning torso im Malmö - are still studies). Only in the attachment all objects of Calatrava are listed, so subtitling the book "complete works" is overdoing it a bit. The explanations on the presented objects are rather short (as there are trialingual in EN/GE/FR), and sometimes a few more details might have been interesting. The leading role in this book anyway are the nice photographies and the sketches of the individual objects. If this makes it coffee table book, so be it. Calatrava has a very distinct and extraordinary style, bringing science fiction to mind and making its objects looking nearly lifelike. If you like this style and considering the rather modest price this book is a worthwhile buy.

Don't expect much 6 Jan 2010
Format:Hardcover
Well, Santiago Calatrava has been my idol since I started studying architecture. Basically this book, has loads of his sketches and conceptual paintings. Very brief explanation about his works. Beautiful images. More of a book to be on the coffee table than to be on a bookshelf.

Excellent color photographs and more importantly. hand sketches by Calatrava of each architectural structure prior to its construction. I have always trusted German Publishing company Taschen and have high regard for the quality of work they produce.

Complete Works (almost) 18 Nov 2010
By Anthony Thompson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is an exceptional book on the entire sweep of Calatrava's career to date. Both the text and the illustrations (conceptual sketches, drawings and photographs) are top-notch. However, this book claims to present the complete works. It does not. It has omitted his proposal for the replacement of the collapsed 35W interstate bridge across the Mississippi river in Minneapolis. It also omits a grouping of residential (and hotel) towers which he has proposed near his City of Arts and Science in Valencia. The tops of those towers, BTW, can be glimpsed in the background of a small illustration of the Agora near the end of the book.
