SYNOPSIS: The accent is on realism in this thoughtful portrait of one of the Old West's most unusual and Colourful personalities. Born Martha Jane Canary, "Calamity Jane" (Jane Alexander) could ride, shoot, track and brawl as good as any man. In fact she preferred the company of men over women, which often got her into trouble with the "proper ladies" of her time. Her busy life included stints as a stagecoach driver, army scout, farmer and prospector, as well as a possible relationship with Wild Bill Hickock. Trick rider, crack shot, expert poker player, wife and mother Calamaity Jane was one woman who insisted on living life her way. With its focus on people 'CALAMITY JANE' is a poignant story of a larger than life individual who became a legend in her own time. She's won her place in history... Now she'll take her place in your heart. ABOUT THE DVD: This is a release by PARAMOUNT HOME ENTERTAINEMT for the UK market (Region 2 PAL format - which will play on all standard DVD players in the UK and the rest of Europe - buyers outside of Europe will need a multi-region player in order to view it). The film is presented in its original COLOUR and FULL SCREEN format (4:3 aspect ratio) and runs for a total of 93 minutes - the AUDIO is the original ENGLISH language and MONO - SUBTITLES are in English for the Hearing Impaired, English, Arabic, Bulgarian, Croat, Czech, Dutch, Finnish, French, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Icelandic, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Serbian, Slovenian and Turkish.

Calamity was no Doris Day 6 Sep 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
If you have seen the musical "Calamity Jane" with Doris Day then you need to see the REAL story. Calamity was more than a song a dance- she was a true independant pioneer woman. This biopic is a very frank potrayal of the real Calamity Jane. It depicts her as a real person with real problems. Jane Alexander delivers a remarkable performance- including a smile a dentist would shudder over. If you are into American History, particularly 19th century western, then I highly recommend this movie.

Wild Bill Hickok steals the show!! 1 Dec 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
I loved this movie! Jane Alexander did a great job portraying Calamity Jane as the wild, gritty woman of the west but also exposed her softer side as she struggled with giving away her baby, the weakness she had for Wild Bill, and the shattering grief of his death. However, for me, Frederic Forrest stole the show as Wild Bill Hickok. I have read a lot of material about Wild Bill Hickok, and Frederic Forrest brought him to life -- probably much better than he actually was. With his squint-eyed gaze, long hair, and dark good looks, he played the sexiest Wild Bill I've ever seen!! Frederic Forrest is so great in westerns - rivals Clint Eastwood in flinty coolness! Although the story is rather sad, I loved this movie and want to purchase it so I can watch it again.

Calamity Jane 9 Jun 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This video was obviously made for television, but it is definitely worth watching, even with the obvious fade aways for commercials. It is a realistic rendition of Jane's life, and I enjoyed it tremendously. Jane Alexander is very believable as Calamity Jane; and I have a whole new respect for the life of a very talented woman who spent her life for Wild Bill Hickock. I found myself sobbing at the end!
