this is the Purple with Coverdale and Hughes on vocals
a famous live show from 1974, was this their Altamont?
supposedly the loudest ever rock show
works well on the new songs from burn
smoke on the water somehow sounds wrong
Blackmore was having problems with his equipment
he was soon to quit to be replaced by Bolin
you should know the story one of the best in rock history

Cal Jam edited but good 1 April 2014
By frank - Published on
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
This is an edited version of the Cal Jam 74 concert. Somewhat of a dissapointment. But I'm sure it was to keep the cost of this disc down. Still a very very good disc and well worth the money. All live Deep Purple is good so do yourself a favor and add this to your DP collection. DP MK III rules!

Terrible sound 5 April 2014
By Mighty Slim - Published on
Format: Audio CD
You can tell how a recording is going to sound by the way the audience roar sounds before the music even starts. This seems to be another case of a much too mid rangey sounding CD. Whatever filter is used affects the whole recording. The hi hat sound from the drums are very mushy and way too in your face. Way to be hip and modern guys. In the liner notes, Blackmore stated that he told the soundman the pecking order of the mix with the guitar first and foremost. This recording seems to have the hi hats and cymbals ahead and louder than everything else. What a disappointment. If this is some crap 2 track master they chose to put out, then I can live with the fact that when Ritchie solo's on Burn he is buried. However I cannot live with the mid rangey garbage and the loud in your face drums problems. I remember how I hated that trend in the 90s on hard rock recordings. Well you can enjoy it hear folks. I'll be there are bootlegs out there that sound better. Guaranteed.
