5.0 out of 5 stars A great book, 25 Oct 2006
In this book the author Julie Duff, as the title suggests, presents traditional and regional variations on different recipes from Britain and Ireland. Classic recipes for small cakes, fruit cakes, gingerbreads, tea breads, sweet treats, and biscuits are included. Wartime ration cakes also get a mention. She also gives some background information on each recipe; where or when it originated etc., as well as personal anecdotes. It's a wonderful anthology. I only have it a few weeks and already I refer to it time and time again. I've baked a few cakes using this book and they've been met with approval each time. I look forward to trying out many more of these recipes in the future.

4.0 out of 5 stars good results from julie duff!, 9 Dec 2004
By lisa stocks (Portlethen, Aberdeen United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
i have made quite a lot of cakes following the receipes of julie duff, and i appreciate the history that she has provided, I certainly couldn't care less about her grammar or prose, it's the cake result that's far more interesting!
The marmalade cake is just superb, you can't just eat one slice then walk away! The dundee cake is also a winner, however, the receipe for a very old fashioned plum cake is sublime. I go on to sell my cakes at fayre's and fete's, and the comments about the plum cake are always encouraging. Fochabers gingerbread very interesting. A trusted book in my collection!

4.0 out of 5 stars Cakes for expats, 24 Aug 2004
This is a great book for recreating the cakes you remember & haven't tasted in decades - the Dundee cake & Yorkshire teacakes are pure nostalgia. Baking times are way off however & as noted by the previous reviewer the prose & grammar are irritating.
