This book is full of the most beautiful and unusual cakes - that you will fall in love with.
It can either be the only cake decorating book you own or a fantastic addition to your current collection. Full of ideas for weddings, engagements, birthdays and any other type of cake you can think of - even Christmas baubles! It is more modern with new trends in cake decorating, although it does have a few sugar paste flowers, this is not the main focus of the book. If you want sugarcraft flowers I recommend Alan Dunn.
Makiko takes you through every step in the process of making cakes from choosing the flavour and the filling, different types of icing from Royal icing, ganache to roll out sugarpaste. Best of all it is British, so that means rich fruit cake as well as a wide and unusual variety of alternative sponges. It also includes the recipes as well as one for 16 mini 2" cakes that are so popular now.
Cakes to Fall In Love With features cakes that would grace even the most regal of tables and the step-by-step instructions to make them, with templates at the back.
Makiko Searle is a true artist and the book showcases her talents, but is also set out in such a way that I can't wait to try some of these with my young niece who is a budding baker ;) truly one of my favourite cake decorating books. I love the hat cakes, and I can't wait to try some, but I think the wedge wood inspired cake is lovely.
If you love cake decorating or want to learn modern cakes - BUY this with confidence.
Note: There is another review that gives 4 stars. It basically comments on the long wait as the publishers were late releasing the book. This is a 5 star book, and should not lose marks because the print run was delayed. I wish people would stop using reviews meant for the book to mark down on delivery times.
Edit: another reviewer has some quite harsh things to say about this book. She is right that the teapot is not the best, the spout position is incorrect, but hey I've studied pottery! My main criticism would be the hats, she has loads of designs for hats, (which I love) just too much of the same thing. The green embossed cake, wouldn't be my choice, but I think it is quite interesting, if for no other reason than to get me thinking outside the box for cake decorating ideas. Plus if it was pink it would probably be a much more widely appreciated cake. I am used to modelling in clay and am bringing that skill over to cake decorating, I have found this book inspiring, and has set me off into a world of ideas. I still think this is a great book. I think my favourite is still Mich Turners Couture Cakes
