More About the Author

Fiona graduated from Exeter University with a B.Ed. (Hons.), specialising in Psychology and Art and Design. After university she worked as a researcher and writer for a company which published educational material for places where children went on school visits (zoos, museums, stately homes etc). Fiona then taught seven, eight and nine year olds for five years; three years at a state school in Sevenoaks in Kent, and two years at The British School in the Netherlands in The Hague.

Fiona joined Usborne Publishing as an assistant editor in 1989, and over the years has been promoted to editor, senior editor, and then managing editor. In 2003, she became an editorial director at Usborne, largely responsible for writing baby and novelty books, and art and activity titles.

Fiona has written over 100 titles for Usborne Publishing including the phenomenally successful 'That's not my...' touchy-feely series. Other titles include large touchy-feely books on topics ranging from princesses to farms; cloth books with touchy-feely patches and flaps; a wide range of step-by-step art and activity books, including 'How to knit'; music books with CDs for babies and toddlers; 'Dolly Dressing' sticker books; Hide-and-Seek lift-the-flap books; bath books; cookery books and snap cards!

She also edits books written by her team of in-house writer/editors, which include step-by-step activity books and a series of young non-fiction, aimed at beginner readers.

Great little book BUT BEWARE - I bought this as well as it's companion 'Beginner's Cookbook' and was dismayed to find that the contents of 'Cakes & Cookies' is actually included in 'Beginner's Cookbook' so you don't really need to buy both, and price for 'Beginner's Cookbook' is only a few pence more than 'Cakes & Cookies' so much better value as you're getting two books in one.

This cookbook is amazing, and I recommend it to everyone! People may scoff at me that I'm a fan of children's cookbooks, but they're always good recipes, which have easy to follow instructions and are almost completely foolproof. I've made nearly all of the recipes in here, and they've all worked amazingly, and come out looking like the pictures. There's a few basic recipes, such as sponge cake and scones, and then there's a few that end up looking more elaborate, such as the chocolate cobweb cake and the choux buns... All are easy to make, well explained, and (unless the mixture ends up getting dropped on the floor or eaten by the dog or child!) are pretty much guarranteed to work every time!

I brought this in the hope my girlfriend would bound into the kitchen, throw flour everywhere and come out with a tray of warm cookies and a glass of milk while I watched the football. So far it has been used as a placemat, fly swat, chopping board and table chock. Im still waiting for the cookies.
