3.0 out of 5 stars Low expectations help..., 5 Mar 2008
By K. Man "Pink" (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
So I was looking at cookie makers because I am bored and have time, the other two on the site use batteries. One got slated in the reviews, the other was pretty good, this one had no reviews. Now I don't really like battery powered goods... and this one seemed pretty functional. Doubles as an icing gun which you can buy for a lot cheaper anyway. But given the gadget status my expectations weren't high - it's a novelty item for bored people. Perfect. So unlike some people who might think the plunger will be a perfect fit and a feat of engineering, I put the dough in a bag and then inside the tube. Less cleaning.
I tried the one recipe they put on the paper inside. It wasn't the best recipe, but try what they give you first (FYI brush with egg because they come out very pale). The instructions say "click once and remove" Leaving the cookie one assumes. Reality check, the dough stays stuck to the template. Because there is nothing to cut it off (if there was a little cigar cutter mechanism to crop the cookie off it would be PERFECT) but instead I worked out a knack... you have to get the dough to a perfect sticky but not too wet consistency and then if you click twice and you're lucky it clings to the baking sheet so you can pull the gun off leaving a decent little cookie shape. It'll get better with some practice but like I said, I have low expectations. Would also be better if the gun mechanism opened at the top so you could remove the whole tube to clean like some icing guns. I should work for KitchenCraft...

4.0 out of 5 stars instructions for those that need them.., 27 Mar 2009
By fee (uk) - See all my reviews
I feel that it is a shame that the other reviewers had problems with this item so decided to write a few instructions. I have had this item (and another older model) for years. Mine came with one recipe on the back of the leaflet that sits on the top of the box when it arrives. I have followed this recipe and baked beautiful shortcake type biscuits. The knack when it comes to pressing them out is to use an UNGREASED non-stick tin. Yes, ungreased is the way to go otherwise it just won't work!

Sorry but this recipe is in american 'cups'

Cookie Recipe

1 1/2 cups butter or marg
1 cup granulated sugar
1 egg
2 tablespoons milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp almond extract
4 cups plain flour
1 teaspoon baking powder

Preheat oven to 200 deg C. Thoroughly cream butter and sugar. Mix egg, milk, extracts together then add gradually to the butter/sugar mixture. Add the flour and baking powder gradually to make a smooth dough. Do not chill. Place dough into cookie press and press cookies onto UNGREASED non-stick baking sheet. Bake for 6 minutes. Remove cookies carefully with a pallet knife whilst still warm. Cool on rack.

I used my food mixer to beat the butter and sugar then put on my dough hook when i added the flour as it is a stiff (but slightly sticky) dough.

When using the press, press it against the baking tin, pull the handle once until it clicks then lift it away from the tin. The dough shape should stick to the tin. If you grease your tin the dough will not stick and you will have big problems.

Hope this helps!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars No recipes, and useless for making biscuits., 22 Feb 2009
By Ian H. Thain "IHT" (Oxfordshire, UK.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
There wasn't a single recipe with this kit - one would have thought they'd have enough sense to give you at least a basic guide to making a biscuit mix of the right consistency - and after several attempts my wife has given up with it and gone back to using her rolling pin and hand cutters. The dough just squeezes out randomly in all directions and there's no means of cutting it off when sufficient has been squeezed out, so you end up trying to use your fingers with predictably messy results. Haven't tried using it for icing, but a conventional icing bag is cheaper and more controllable for that anyway. For making biscuits I regard this product as a waste of time and money.
