Product Description

Review

"About The Only Good Thing: 'A show-stealing, risk-taking first novel... Newman has a liltingly poetic rhythm, an uncanny ear for dialogue and nicely bathetic sense of comic timing. The deadpan tone is rueful and witty by turns, and utterly absorbing.' Guardian; 'The Only Good Thing is told with wit and a sure-handedness unusual in a first novel. It is heartening to know there's a new voice out there willing and eager to take to the stage in such a daring fashion.' New York Times Book Review" --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Irish Times Weekend Review - Rev'd Fiona McCann

'...it is her searingly honest treatment of so much bare skin that
makes this book exceptional' --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Intoxicating 7 July 2007
By Mimi
Format:Paperback
I couldn't put this book down. The voice of Tanya, a sexaholic, workaholic orphaned American expat living in London, sucked me in with in her irony, her twisted humor, and her ultimate vulnerability. A love story for the damaged set - a group of young refugees from a nightmare of child abuse, incest, abandonment, and murder - Cake is both funny and touching. The dialogue is stunning, Newman's quirky use of language riveting, the imagery perfect for the in-between world the lost characters find themselves in. The only thing I didn't like about this book was that it had to come to an end.

I've never read anything quite like Sandra Newman's novel. She throws out the sentimental conventions and tells a dark story in tightly woven prose you can't stop reading. Sometimes you have to remind yourself of the disturbing things that are happening, because she presents them in an unblinking, poker-faced tone. This book messes with your head in a good way. Her characters are driven by forces they don't understand in a way that makes you realize that we all are. This is what literature is supposed to do, I think.

This book is amazing, mesmerizing, exciting, sensual and pure genius. Dickens did it in the 1800's, Steinbeck did it in the 1900's and Newman is doing it in the new millennia. Breakthrough writing, meaninful and beautiful. The only way to "get" Sandra Newman's CAKE is to read it for yourself. Its painfully delicious.
