I saw this film on Egyptian Television many years ago - when I lived in Egypt.
As I lived there for years - I spoke Arabic fluently - so it is the Arabic language version I am reviewing.
I loved Youssef Chahines's work - but Mahatat Misr (Cairo Station) was my all time favourite.

I was cautious first watching it - as I thought it might be dated -
but for me - it was as earthy and realistic as the Cairo slums around the station I had always known.

The ending still has me in tears.

I don't want to give the plot away - but I remember the squatter settlement around the station.
In winter it looked awful and miserable - but when the sun came out everything changed.
The film captured that perfectly.
If you think the actors are overly flamboyant - it's just a feature of how the Egyptian people I knew then were.
It's a while since I've been there -
but the gestures and expressions took me right back in an instant.

For me it's full of nostalgia and memories - but I think even without that you can enjoy the story of the community.
If you liked Kurasawa's Dodes Kaden ( spelling might be off there) -
I think you would like this one.
It's very different from the Alexandria Trilogy he made.

I was thrilled when I finally found this film on amazon - but it's region 1 - so be sure your player will play it.
Mine is multi region.

superb 6 Jan 2012
The recent death of Hind Rostom deprived the world of one of Arab cinema's best-loved actresses. For me, Rostom makes the film as the flirtatious drinks vendor who courts disaster by tempting the unstable Qinawi. The film was required viewing for my degree and I must have watched it a dozen times (once, I was even fortunate enough to see it at the cinema as part of a Youssef Chahine retrospective). The acting really is first rate across the board, displaying that gritty realism and frank treatment of sex and urban conflict that so outraged audiences at the time. Richly interwoven with subtext, this film is a must for anyone with an interest in this part of the world.

Central Central Station 7 Nov 2010
By Bartok Kinski - Published on Amazon.com
Youssef Chahine's Cairo: Central Station is a refreshing blend of hidden sexual tension, film-noir and neo-realism from the 1950's. Sexual motifs pop up regularly, including the playful jest of soda bottles and steaming train whistles. Surprisingly, it is free of censorship and restraint for its day, being an Egyptian film. There's even a hint of breasts seen through the wet blouse of a leading lady.

I truly enjoyed the mixture of labor politics and existential crisis for the cripple newspaper vendor (played by the director himself), who craves a beautiful soda selling con-girl, who is an exact mixture of Brigitte Bardot (French actress) and Maria Schneider (Last Tango in Paris). The acting is superb considering most of the people are street performers.

Highly recommended if you can see it at a film festival.
