Product Description

fRoots, October 2001

Cairo Road is an accessible though not always entirely cohesive selection of mostly vintage Arab music which centres on the "classic Cairo Sound" (big on strings!) and its great voices. There's also a fair amount of related music from the less familiar countries of Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Lebanon, as well as artists from Sudan and Algeria. The live performance by Syria's Sabah Fakhri helps explain how he can be found in the Guinness Book Of Records for non-stop singing. Lebanese chanteuse Soumaya Baalbaki delivers a similarly charged performance on "Sehertou Menhou Allayali". And though she's really working in a rather different field, it's nice to hear the contemporary Sudanese singer Rasha holding her own in such revered company. My only question is: couldn't the compilers have found a more engaging example of the awesome Oum Kalthoum's work to open the collection? --Jon Lusk

This is an essential addition for your collection. I make sure everytime I dj in London, at least two or three tracks get played. A massive, massive recommendation. The cover version of Lady Mamalade is especially good. I always get asked which album it's from. I should buy shares in the record company.

Don't follow the trend of buying the obvious disco tracks of the 70s. 'Latin Disco' has quality and serious tunes. Big, orchestrated and soulful, oh, and damn funky too. I have not got bored yet, and it's been nearly a year and a half since I first bought it.

This is the best single cd introduction to arabic music I have come across- there is a good variety of artists and styles of songs, through six decades of music. Also good is the background info on each artist (though occasionally misleading, such as the implication that the french feel of Soumaya Baalbaki's interpretation of 'Sahirto' was lacking in Abdel Wahhab's original.) Still- there is enough here to get any interested listener going, and plenty of leads to follow up for anyone who wants to get to know the artists and their music better. Plus- it sounds good!

However, a word of warning to total newcomers to arabic music- they have missed out Fairuz! Probably for understandable copyright reasons, but she's an amazing musical phenomenon, with classic oldies as well as modern jazzy stuff. Make sure you listen to one of the collections published by 'Voix de l'orient' soon to help you along in your journey.
