Had me hooked! 24 Nov 2001

Format:Paperback
I think this is the best one in the Monk series by Anne Perry. Monk is trying to prove that Caleb Stone has murdered his twin brother Angus Stonefield, but there is no body to be found. In my opinion this novel has a most baffling conclusion and left me reeling in surprise.

Cain His Brother 31 Dec 2011
By Rich
Format:Paperback
Reacting to the events of 'Sins of The Wolf' Hester and Monk have kept their distance from each other, but an outbreak of typhoid in Limehouse and the case of a man who vanished after meeting his much feared criminal brother, sees them joining forces.

I've given this three stars because I did enjoy this much better than the previous two adventures. Despite the predictable plot, the story was very entertaining in a BBC Sunday night drama fashion. It's disappointing though that Monk and Hester are back at loggerheads again. There are other problems. The biggest one being the author's writing. In an ongoing series where the regular characters lives intersect, it is good to get a reminder of things that have happened in their past, especially if there is a long gap between reading the next one. Unfortunately Perry has a terrible habit of reminding readers of the regular's backstories many times in the same book. You only need to say it once, more than that it feels a bit insulting. Another of her bad habits is an ending which resolves nothing and doesn't deal with the events Perry has set in motion. Perhaps this may be resolved in the next book. This is an interesting series which Perry is clearly passionate about, but she sorely needs an editor who can clear away some of the clutter and narrow the focus.
