Product Description

Originally a French play from 1973 written by Jean Poiret, La Cage Aux Folles then became a joint French and Italian film before being turned into a Broadway musical in 1983. The musical was written by composer Jerry Herman, playwright Harvey Fierstein and director Arthur Laurents and, although the gay theme was considered somewhat risky at the time, it became a huge success. Indeed at the Tony Awards in 1984, it walked off with eight awards and would go on to become the biggest new American musical of the decade.

I love this musical, and wanted to be able to listen to the music from it readily. This is a good version, and follows the story as told on stage well, so is a good way to remember. I didn't want the OBC version, as I love the London cast, so this was a cheaper way to hear my favourite music, in the absece of a London cast (2009) recording.

I didn't expect something great, and I still was surprised what a poor production this is. I will keep it as warning to ever buy something with no names of singers listet.

Don't Be Deceived 2 Jun. 2010

If you're expecting a cast recording of the recent London revival of "La Cage Aux Folles" be assured that this isn't it. This is a studio recording of "selected highlights" by uncredited musicians and signers of limited if not questionable talent. The quality of this recording is what many might consider elevator music but not an elevator in which you'd want to spend much time. "La Cage" contains what some consider Jerry Herman's most melodic and singable scores but you'd never know it from this recording. Possibly the most familiar song from the show is "I Am What I Am", a true show stopper in the show but performed here by a mediocre singer who failed completely to connect with the material and apparently felt that screaming was an effective way to put across this very dramatic number = he was wrong. It's been a long time since I've been so disappointed in a recording. This album fails miserably on virtually every level - I'd suggest avoiding it regardless of the cost, my copy will never be played again (at least by me) and will most likely end up in the Goodwill collection box.
