Product Description

Songlines magazine, August/September 2008 (issue #54)
If Simon Cowell worked in the world music sector, there'd already have been a `Buena Vista moment' for every nation on the planet, there'd be a TV show called BVSC Factor and every culture would be represented by a motley band of four or five old-timers clad in traditional garb. Argentinian producer Gustavo Santaolalla, best known in the UK for his Oscar-winning Brokeback Mountain soundtrack and his funny dances at Bajofondo gigs has, in his Café de los Maestros project, created something akin to a Buenos Aires Social Club. In late 2003, Santaolalla travelled from his adopted Los Angeles to Buenos Aires in order to work with the surviving veterans of tango - former superstars such as Nelly Omar (b 1911), Horacio Salgán (b 1916) and Mariano Mores (b 1918). He created an orquesta típica full of veterans and emerging talents, led by Piazzolla's violinist Fernando Suárez Pas, and then took the singers and musicians into the studio - sometimes as soloists, sometimes in duos - to record an album. At the same time he had a camera crew filming it for posterity.
The result was a beautiful, varied and potentially classic set of recordings. The opening track features Carlos García (b 1914) conducting an orchestra playing a version of his `Al Maestro con Nostalgia'. It's gorgeous and highly evocative, but leaves you wondering if the album will be two hours of ballroom swooning. But Santaolalla is too savvy to heap too many old-style orchestral numbers on a modern audience, so he gives us a range of tango fixes. The following track features guitarist Aníbal Arias playing for Uruguayan singer Lágrima Ríos (b 1924), a legend in her own right and one of the first artists to perform tango alongside folk and candombe songs. Next comes the sweet-sounding milonga `Orgullo Criollo', then a thoughtful guitar number, a tango torch song and another orchestral setting - this time for `A Mis Viejos' by Osvaldo Berlingieri (b 1929), which shares its three-note motif with Piazzolla's `Adiós Nonino'. There are 27 tracks in all - and all are well chosen and delivered with incredible craft.
The album was first released in Argentina in mid-2005, and the delayed European release due to a desire to release the CD and documentary at the same time. But the wait is nothing - these artists have been around upwards of 70 years. Santaolalla's project is unique, well timed and of immense cultural value.

5.0 out of 5 stars new recordings of the greatest songs in tango history, 9 Jul 2008
By Ian Ashbridge "US Fan" (US) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The historic, once-in-a-lifetime summit meeting of the legendary "maestros" of tango, reunited in Buenos Aires by producer-composer Gustavo Santaolalla

This double CD represents new recordings of the greatest songs in tango history along with a 50 page booklet

Café de los Maestros is the most ambitious project ever undertaken involving tango repertoire. Winning producer/composer Gustavo Santaolalla (Motorcycle Diaries and Brokeback Mountain) reunites the outstanding tango musicians of the 1940s and '50s in Buenos Aires (Aníbal Arias, Leopoldo Federico, Oscar Ferrari, Carlos García, Juan Carlos Godoy, Lágrima Ríos, and Horacio Salgán to name a few)

In this state-of-the-art recording Café de los Maestros displays a wide range of different tango styles: from traditional to milongas and creole waltzes; from purely orchestral numbers to vocal pieces - all in the authentic style of the old maestros! An unprecedented homage to tango!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Indispensable Master Class in the Tango genre, 29 Dec 2008
By Mr. S. J. Bonsor "bonsor2" (Horley, Surrey UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Anyone who saw the wonderful documentary of Cafe de los maestros will want to have this superlative collection of performances by the stalwarts of the tango. These performers have lost nothing of their power, mastery, sheer musicality and infectious joy in interpreting this fabulous music.

Listening to these musicians, many of whom are in their 80s, and whose heyday was in the 1950s, is breathtaking, especially since they were, for the most part, badly served by the recording companies they worked for in the middle of the 20th century.

Now, at the beginning of the 21st century, their artistry comes up as fresh as paint.

Buy this collection at once and revel in tango as it should be played!
