About the Artist

A native of the island nation of Cape Verde, Cesária Évora was known as the country's foremost practitioner of the morna, a combination of West African percussion with Portuguese fados, Brazilian modhinas, and British sea shanties. After a short singing career in the 1970's, she returned in the late '80s with a string of fine albums. Her 1999 album 'Café Atlantico' (a reference to her home where she frequently entertained guests) is a much acclaimed masterpiece, finding Césaria Évora venturing into more Latin American musical landscapes, as opposed to Portuguese, which dominated her previous albums. Évora draws from traditional Cuban and Brazilian music to mesmerizing effect. The music is heartbreaking and nostalgic, warm and tragic all at once. This album is nothing short of world class, and it has its very first vinyl issue, with two bonus tracks included.

Format: Audio CD
I had never heard Cesaria Evora until this album and what pleasure she gives. I love this album. A lot of the songs have a soothing melancholy feeling to them but come over as uplifting rather than depressing. Listening to this after a stressful day is an excellent way to relax and recover your equilibrium.

This is an excellent compilation of songs and music by a superb artist who sadly passed away last year. It was delivered instantly to my mp3 player which I was able to play immediately.Amazon's digital media is an excellent service.

Just from the CD cover you know this is going to be a corker - Ms Evora's cheeky old face says it all: she is the diva darling of Capo Verde, wearing more gold than you've ever seen, sharing a drink with the good old boys in the local bar. And when you hear the music, you can't blame her. It's unclear whether it's the Afro-Latino rhythms, the mysterious creole lyrics or the astounding quality and diversity of the compositions which make this a hit, but it just works. You will be transported. Enjoy. Bex

Heard track on BBC Radio 3 World Routes and was hooked. Why have we not heard more of the Cape Verde singer. An enjoyable and very relaxing hour or so.

I first heard this album at my then girlfriend's place. It was then I fell in love with it. Imagine my surprise when I found out I was to do some work in Cape Verde. I though it was great. I was later to find it was much more than that. I visited her home in Mindelo, the cultural centre of the islands, and got to know the place and it's people over a period of 5 weeks. No, sadly, she wasn't home, but touring. Ahh well... I stepped into a restaurant in Mindelo one night and saw a dead ringer for Cesaria in there; sadly, I was wrong! However, the place, the people, the music are all magic. Sunsets have never been as dramatic and moving as they are in Cape Verde. And now, every time I listen to this album, I get to feel a little of the magic I felt in this beautiful place. Thanks to this amazing woman whom the world is only just discovering. As I said, sublime! But don't take my word for it, listen and discover for yourself; you'll be a richer person for it.
