This latest sampler from the Metro label "Cafe" Series concentrates on Algerian Rai music, as heard all over North Africa. Andy Morgan's extensive sleevenotes spin an enchanting tale of the music playing in the imaginary cafe of Mr Faouzi, in the medina of Casablanca. Listening especially to Johanne Hayat's 'Parfums d'Orient',I was transported back to the alleyway cafes of Tangier, sticky lamb tagine with couscous, and the smell of dubious cigarettes in the air. Raina Rai's pulsating 'Hagda' gets the Cafe rocking whilst 'Wahlaich', by Haim, brings on the bellydancers. The final track 'Adieu', with Cheikh Djelloul Remchaoui's haunting spoken and sung narration, brings Cafe Arabia to a close and ensures fantastic memories of North African journeys, whether imaginary or real.
