DVD Description
Acclaimed as âone of the greatest songwriters of the centuryâ by the New York Times, Caetano Veloso is among the most influential and beloved of todayâs Brazilian artists. For non-Brazilians to understand his significance, it has been said, it is necessary to imagine a combination of John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Dylan Thomas and Stevie Wonder, and then some. His unique style has drawn on influences as diverse as mainstream rock, jazz fusion, bossa nova, blues, pop, reggae, samba and folk balladry but, above all, it is undeniably Brazilian.
In this concert, from the Metropolitan in Rio de Janeiro, Caetano Veloso sings classic Hispanic songs from the 1940s and â50s that have been in his life since he was a child, but presented in his unique style. Many of these songs featured on the two best-selling albums of Velosoâs career, âFina Estampaâ and âFina Estampa En Vivoâ, as well as âCucurrucucu Palomaâ which he sang on Pedro Almodovarâs hit film âTalk to Herâ in 2002. He also performs some of his own compositions. Literally translated âfina estampaâ means âsmall printâ, but undoubtedly Veloso had the phraseâs idiomatic meaning in mind: If you have âfina estampaâ it means you cut an elegant and refined figure â" an apt description of the Brazilian singer himself. Veloso appears with an orchestra conducted by his long-serving musical director Jaques Morelenbaum, who features on cello for several numbers. The line-up includes Zeca Assumpçâo (double bass), Mingo Araújo (percussion), Luis Brasil (guitar), Jota Moraes (piano), Marcelo Costa (drums) and Rodolpho Cardoso (marimba). A charismatic live performer, Veloso sings several acoustic numbers that highlight the gentle, seraphic quality of his voice.
