Amazon.co.uk Review

A purely tasteless, moronic, guilty pleasure. Director Harold Ramis employs a mixture of Mad magazine National Lampoon maturity and Saturday Night Live sarcasm in this goofball golf comedy set on the grounds of a posh country club. Somewhere buried in the slapstick antics, drug references, Marx Brothers-like insults, and gratuitous sex scenes are the intertwined, forgettable subplots of a poor caddie (Michael O'Keefe) trying to earn enough cash to attend college, and golf-tournament and class battles between rich and even richer snobs. Mainly, Ramisjust lets his colourful group of eccentrics crash into each other, relying on several inspired performances to create several hilarious moments of sketch comedy. Most come from the trio of Bill Murray (playing a vile, obsessed groundskeeper engaged in a one-man war with a charismatic and very stuffed gopher), Rodney Dangerfield (basically recreating his crude stand-up routine), and Chevy Chase (who looks bemusedly stoned throughout). Quotable favourites include Murray's acted-out fantasy of winning the Masters, his tall tale about caddying for the Dalai Lama, an overreaching priest's rain-soaked golf game, Dangerfield's verbal assault on the club's uptight dining patrons, and Chase's lesson on the essence of golf ("Be the ball, Danny"). A perfect double feature with other comparably crass films such as National Lampoon's Vacation or Stripes. --Dave McCoy

Golf... Only Fun! 4 July 2004
Format:DVD
There are only two reasons why Golf is a worthwhile sport. They are 'Happy Gilmore', and this film.

Starring a stellar 80's comedy cast this is film is great fun, and even stands up to this very day. Similar to many 80's comedy films (like the 'National Lampoon's Vacation' series and 'Animal House') this features plenty of humour, some crude, and attractive women, topless!

In all seriousness this is a very funny and good film.

Guilty Pleasure 8 July 2008
Format:DVD
I first saw this back in the early 80s and although it was indisputably crude and juvenile it appealed to my own crude, juvenile sense of humour. It sort of dropped off my radar for years until I got talking to a work mate about films we remembered from childhood and Caddyshack cropped up as a shared highlight. We then spent the next few weeks trying to drop in quotes from the movie into conversations and memos.

So it's difficult for me to be objective about this one. I can see that the jokes are mostly lame, the subplots are predictable and the acting rarely rises above the adequate. But I still can't help laughing like a drain whenever I watch it.

It's probably one for nostalgists who remember when we thought Chevy Chase was funny and when Bill Murray made comedies. I do understand how this film will leave a lot of people stone faced - so maybe it's a rent before you try. But, for the rest of us this is a guilty pleasure.

First, let me be clear. The film is very good and I would give it at least four stars. Need I saw more.

The problem is with the Blu-ray transfer.

The studio has done the usual and not bothered to clean the film up for a high definition transfer, so there is no point at all buying this on Blu-ray. The picture is no better than the DVD release. Just save your money and stick with the normal DVD.

Fun to re-watch, I don't exactly recall it being so focussed on sex and drugs when I watched this as a kid, but I must have had my priorities mixed at the time.
