Review

'Hilary McKay, the best writer of child dialogue around at the moment, has come up with another winner.'

(Nicholas Tucker, Independent )

'If you haven't read these books, what on earth are you waiting for? You won't find a more endearing, eccentric, maddening and marvellously warm family in any other book, by anyone, ever.'

(The Ultimate Book Guide )

REVIEWS FOR THE CASSON FAMILY:
'Witty, warm and humourous ... family reading par excellence.'

(Carousel )

'A crazily fantastic story with loads of mad and hilarious moments.'

(Independent on Sunday )

'It does what we hope JK Rowling would do: it makes everything you wish for come true, including the unlikeliest of outcomes.' (Sunday Times )

'Hilary McKay's wittily observed portrayals of family life are full of warmth, vitality and irrepressible good humour.'

(Kate Agnew, The Guardian )

'just the sort of crazy family you ache to be a part of.'

(The Good Book Guide )

'... we are so fond of this fresh, funny, foolish, wise, real family.'

(The Horn Book Magazine )

'... as wild and endearing as ever ... Another charmer for Casson fans.'

(Booklist )

'... touching and hiarious. Beautifully crafted descriptive language makes this offering a real gem.'

(School Library Journal )

'McKay has a genius for domestic comedy.' (The Sunday Times )

'Hilary McKay's strength lies in her understanding of young people and her ability to evoke them very simply.' (The Guardian )

'Warm, witty and wise, with unfeasibly broad appeal and proven anti-depressive properties, i would give this book to 9-year olds, teenagers and their parents.'

(Sunday Telegraph )

'... hugely entertaining story effortlessly recreates a tightly knit world, imbued with a strong sense of belonging - a slice of childhood so multi-layered, touching and real that there's something for every child reader to identify with and savour. Here's a book that truly proves the joys to be had from reading.'

(Books for Keeps )

Hard to think of a writer for 10-13s who writes so freshly and wisely about family and friends

(Sunday Times )

A well-loved author 11 Jan 2012
By Jan
Format:Hardcover
This is the first book by Hilary McKay that I have read. Not quite sure why I haven't read any of the others as they all very popular with the girls who use my school library. Now I understand why. Caddy and her family and friends are at the heart of this story and we follow these wonderful characters as they go about their daily lives. The Casson family is eccentric, but lovable, and we feel the family's deep anxiety when baby Rose is born prematurely, we worry about Caddy's friend Beth when she stops eating properly and we sympathise with Ruby dilemma about changing schools. The characters are all so real and their problems, both large and small, are totally believable. Ms McKay tackles issues that confront these girls with both humour and intelligence. I now understand why her books are so well-loved and I really must read all the others in the series.

Caddy's World 7 Jun 2011
By BJW
Format:Hardcover
Caddy's world is a prequel to the best selling Casson family series (Saffy's Angel, Indigo's star ect) and follows a twelve year old Caddy as her premature sister, 'the firework baby', lies ill in hospital. All the characters of the series are there (even Saffy's angel character Sarah is briefly mentioned), with some new ones as well. And the verdict? I enjoyed Caddy's world and loved peeking into the life of Caddy before the series began, but if you have not read the Casson family books, I suggest you avoid this one. There would be just too many undevloped characters and loose ends. If this book was twice the length, and went into twice as much detail, I would award this book a full five stars, but as it is, it's fairly average, which is a shame as I thought this book would be amazing. Overall, a really enjoyable read for Casson family fans, but I feel this book is not quite to the standard I have come to expect from Hilary McKay, hence the four stars.
