An anonymous telephone call points the police to the discovery of a dead body at a cottage in Morbay. The place is rented to a Tessa Trencham but the body has been lying there a while, and the maggots have been busy so visual identification is not possible. Investigating are DI Wesley Peterson and his boss DCI Gerry Heffernan. Whilst they are seeking dental records, the bodies of two teenagers are found naked and shot.

Always short of money for his digs archaeologist Neil Watson, Wesley's university friend, has reluctantly accepted a bizarre commission from an artist, who has permission from the son of the owner of Catton Hall to dig up a `Feast of Art' in one of his fields, but Neil is having a hard job, keeping his volunteers motivated.

Running along side the current investigations is a separate story of manhunts in 1815 and related through two journals, one kept by John Tandy, a jester and the other by Christopher Wells, steward to Squire Edward Catton, an ancestor of the current owner of Catton Hall..

Searching for a motive for the killing of the teenagers, Wesley discovers that they were both playing an online game, Blood Hunt. Could they be playing this online game for real? And if so, who is the organiser?

Intricately plotted this is an absorbing tale, as the past merges into the present. Who could be running human hunts? How fascinating is it that history could be repeating it self.

A dual tale of human hunting that gives us pause for thought. Can this happen today?
Highly recommended.

I don't know how Kate Ellis does it, she never produces novels that are a "bit off form" that can happen in series - and I have read every one of the Wesley Peterson series.

Other reviewers have described the plot. What I would say tht this novel gives an intriguing and believable plot. The craft of weaving contemporary and past (with the historical explanation at the end) adds further fascination and is remarkably well done and captivating.

The pace is kept up throughout the whole novel. This is also due to the fact that there doesn't seem to be a word wasted. Familar characters are well drawn out and new characters are realistically portrayed.

This series is extremely televisual. Plus it was available on Kindle straight away - a real bonus when with some novels you have to wait a considerable amount of time.

I'm looking forward to the next Joe Plantagent novel and hope this is released on Kindle at the same time as the book.

Wesley Peterson Series 8 May 2012

Kate Ellis's Wesley Peterson series is wonderful. This is the best kind of police procedural - the Police, Wesley and his boss are a perfect team in seeking out the perpetrators of the grisly murders in their neck of the woods. Ellis deftly weaves historical events and current archeology into the crime investigation, providing the reader with an exciting link to the past as well as an understanding of archeology. Ellis also gives an extremely interesting view of police proceedure in England. Her books are interesting and exciting. Wesley also has a compelling home life and history with his degree in archeology and his interactions with wife Pam and their two children. The Cadaver Game is an intense book combining current murder with a 17 year old crime and a daunting past event that helps mold the area. The hunt victims are relatable and the characters leave you guessing as to who is guilty. Ellis then ties everything together perfectly, revealing the perpetrator and the links to the past into an extremely satisfying ending.
