Cachaíto is generally regarded as the finest bass player in Cuba. A maestro of the groove, he is best known internationally as the heartbeat of the Buena Vista Social Club - the one musician who has played on every track of every album in the Buena Vista Social Club series.
Cachaíto is the torchbearer for the phenomenal López dynasty. For generations, this intensely musical family - which boasts over 30 bass players - has been an integral part of Cuban music. As a youth, Cachaíto witnessed a revolution in Cuban music as his father Orestes and his uncle Israel (Cachao) made their groundbreaking innovations of the 'mambo' and 'descarga'.
It is now Cachaíto's turn to move in to the spotlight with a unique album that marks a departure from World Circuit's Buena Vista series.
Cachaíto's bass playing has the classic big warm sound associated with his uncle. Both are masters of groove, but with his debut album, Cachaíto has created something very personal and unique - a new sound, a new instrumentation and a new approach. Heavily atmospheric, this album it has been likened to a soundtrack for an imaginary film. It incorporates a wide variety of influences that stretch from dub reggae to jazz and DJ culture, while the music remains essentially Cuban, rooted in the deep tradition of Cuban rhythms.
Personnel includes:
Orlando Cachaíto López - (Bass), Miguel 'Anga' Díaz - (Congas, Percussion), Pee Wee Ellis - (Tenor Sax & Hammond Organ), Manuel 'Guajiro' Mirabal - (Trumpet), Ibrahim Ferrer - (Vocals), Amadito Valdés - (Timbales), Carlos González - (Bongos), Bigga Morrison - (Hammond Organ, Clavinet), Dee Nasty - (decks/scratching), Hugh Masekela - (Flugelhorn), Roberto Fonseca - (Piano), Roman Felio - (Alto Saxophones), Tony Remy - (Electric Guitar) and many others.
