Best in class 17 Jun 2010

I read this book while at college studying furniture making and design almost twenty years ago. At the time it was the best source of information on becoming a professional cabinet maker. Twenty years on and it's still without competition. Add to this the fact that Alan Peters is one of the finest makers this country has seen in the last century and you have a work that should be considered essential reading for anyone in the UK wanting to make fine furniture for a living.

I have been an avid reader of furniture making books for most of my career. I have read most of the classics including Joyce, Krenov, Maloof, Nakashima et al. Brilliant as these books are, the only book that gives you an understanding of what it is to run a business doing this, is Alan Peters' book. If you are planning to make the leap into the world of professional making, then get a copy of this book and read it cover to cover. Then read it again.

Although i don't normally post reviews, i thought it worthwhile on this occasion to share some information with potential buyers...
Chances are you're here because you already know of the book, the author, and the reputation that precedes them both.
It was a fairly lengthy and fruitless search that led me to contact the publishers of the book directly, Stobart Davies. My e-mail was answered promptly, and after a phonecall and just a few days, i am now holding in my hands a brand new copy of the second edition of this book, obtained at the cover price (plus postage).
I am aware that submitting a review for a book which you have not actually read is an ignorant thing to do, but i think that anybody considering paying the hugely inflated prices being demanded for original copies needs to be aware.
