Format: DVD
Aaron Boone(Craig Scheffer) is suffering from disturbing nightmares. Nightmares that depict a subterranian world called Midian, a world of monsters. His psychiatrist Decker(David Cronenberg) reassures him and gives him some pills to calm him down. Boone's life is about to get a lot worse, as he's falsly accused of a series of brutal murders, and soon he is on the run, discovering that sometimes dreams and nightmares can indeed become reality...
I usually start a review of a Clive Barker film adaptation by stating that I haven't read the source material the film is based on. The reverse is true here, as I read Cabal several years before I got to watch the film, directed by Barker himself. Just to note before I go on that this release is called Cabal, just like the book and that a lot of the product info is wrong and misleading. A very fine release this is too despite a lack of extras.
So, is it any good?. I would give this film two big thumbs up, as it is a pretty good adaptation of Cabal, despite changing some plot points. Apparently, there is a much longer Director's cut out there somewhere, waiting to be released.
Crucial to this films success are the performances, uniformially good. Cronenberg is outstanding as Decker, Scheffer very good as Boone and great turns by Hugh Ross as Narcisse, Charles Haid as redneck Captain Eigerman and Catherine Chevalier as Rachel.
Even more crucial than the performances is the wonderful make-up for the society of shapeshifting monsters and the terrific design of Midian itself, a series of underground catacombs and dark corners. As Narcisse puts it 'Shangri La on acid'.
A real highlight is Lori's walkabout through Midian, a real tour-de-force of a sequence.

Let me begin by telling you that i am a hugh fan of Barker and this movie, i emailed amazon direct because as far as i am aware there is no version of Nightbreed (Cabal in book fomat) on DVD (alas Amazon don't seem to be interested!?) - the original VHS was entitled Nightbreed which, has been cruedly streamed (badly) onto DVD and entitled Cabal as a cover. I am very suprised the copywrite forces have not acted upon this as £19 seem a little steep for something you could export yourself from VHS to DVD?

so my review is (in short) - this is a great movie - New Line Cinema - get yourself in gear and release this beast so people don't get ripped off

i will be sending a copy of this email to FACT and hope that they act upon it!

Nightbreed was one of my wife's favourite movies of the late 80's and I have spent each festive period in recent years wondering why it has never been released on region 2 given that Clive Barker has a good following in the UK. Finally I took the plunge with this Italian import, and I am glad I did. The important bits:
Yes, as with all DVDs, English soundtrack and no subtitles means you can happily watch it without any issues, or you can of course keep the italian subtitles on if you wish.
No it isn't remastered at all, the transfer quality is OK but don't expect anything but a straight copy of the film - given that the make-up and effects are 30+years old, probably no bad thing.
Yes you will enjoy it, if you liked it then you'll still like it now and if you haven't seen it then welcome to the world of 80s fantasy horror, overacting, big hair, dodgy camerawork; fantastic
