I bought one of these for my elderly mum. We started by trying it on a bottle of Bovril (big one) - typical problem for elderly folk. We watched and laughed as the jaws clamped on - nothing - and revolved uselessly about 1/8th inch short of the lid. OK. Fair enough, probably below the rated size range for the product, but made one wonder how useful that range is. Then we got out a bottle of home made chutney (fresh, not stale or with a stuck-on lid). The machine clamped down on it, the motor whined, then snarled, and the drive pinion shot off in two pieces under the fridge. Deeply unimpressive.
This machine is too light for a doorstop but might make a paperweight. Had one of those and couldn't think of any other use for the Culinaire, so I retrieved the batteries and the gadget went straight in the bin.

I like this product as it is an answer to mechanichally "locked" big jars. It opens everything but beware sometime it might startle you when it pops the jar open! I initially bought this product for my 80+ mother-in-law.I don't think though that she has the coordination to hold her finger on the button for long enough or position it safely. This is all it requires and I however, find it great in my fight against jars.
